I was a plank holder for the recommissioning in early spring of 1968.
The USS Garrett County LST 786 and USCG
I was assigned to the USS Satyr in July of 1967 where it was undergoing repairs.

A mechanical problem forced the crew to steer the LST manually, roaches infested the deckhouse, and malfunctioning toilets also complicated the passage, according to the captain's log.
The salvaged LST was used in Normandy as well as North Africa, Salerno and Sicily during World War II.
The privately operated USS LST Ship Memorial Inc. will conduct fund-raisers to keep the ship operating as a museum that would eventually travel from port to port.

I went aboard the U.S.S. Providence in Oct of 1966 and stayed on her untill I was discharged from the Navy in Feb. 1970.
Upon transferred on the Commodore in 1971, I was re-assigned to the USS Josephus Daniels (DLG-27) as the Captain's and Commodore's steward.
From there I wwent to the USS Conyngham DDG-17 Spent the rest of my time there also attended Morse Code School while on Board the Conyngham I was on board the Conyngham when she went to Bath Ma.

APA 33 USS BAYFIELD Been talking to a crew member of the Bayfield that served aboard her from Utah Beach Normandy on D Day to Iwo Jima.
O.C. Stratton served on the ak95 uss murzim in 44, 45, and 46.

When WW II ended most of the LST's were scrapped, modified, or given to Navies of other countries.
This has been a real emotional roller coaster in all our lives and it soon will be over with and I couldn't be prouder of my husband and all the other men on that ship.
You will be hearing from me again about the 10th of Jan. May God bless our ship and our crew and may He bless and keep all you healthy and safe in the new year.

Earlier this year, I saw an announcement for the USS Underhill reunion, and an address and phone number to reply.
I'll soon be leaving here for my next duty station aboard the USS Fife, (DD 991), in Everett, WA., where Anne and I will be for the next three years.
I was born 7 years after he died, but I think of him and appreciate the sacrifices he and other Navy men made during WWII for our freedom.

Message is: I am looking for any crew member that served aboard the USS Nueces from the time we recommisioned her till the time she was deconnisioned in Long Beach.
While in Viet Nam, he was assigned to the USS Harnett County (LST-821).He was then assigned to a river patrol boat, then to a Swift Boat.

Despite the fact that their enlistment contracts restricted their training and duties, stewards, like everyone else aboard ship, were assigned battle stations, including positions at the guns and on the bridge.
By the end of December 1941 the number of Negroes in the Navy had increased by slightly more than a thousand men to 5,026, or 2.4 percent of the whole, but they continued to be excluded from all positions except that of steward.
