LST 491 unloaded at Utah Beach, went on to Omaha Beach, unloaded the remainder of vehicles and troops and began to pick up survivors.
In 1942, the plant contracted with the Navy to build LSTs, and within nine months a swampland of 64 acres had disappeared and in its place was a shipyard producing LSTs.
When the LST lands at an invasion coast, a set of doors in the bow opens and a ramp is lowered directly to the beach.

Plane was damaged by the U.S.S. ALCYONE and U.S.S. WAR HAWK and was seen to crash.
At 0755, 13 January 1945, a single enemy plane (Oscar) made a near miss suicide dive on the U.S.S. LST 700 resulting in three killed and two wounded.
Com- plete loss of power resulted and ship was taken in tow by the U.S.S. Unit proceeded to Mindoro Island leaving U.S.S. 700 there to effect repairs, and continued to Dulag, Leyte, P. arriving at 1101, 16 January 1945.

I myself was in the Navy as a QM in the early 70's aboard the USS Barnstable County (LST-1197).
I hope that the USS Indianapolis survivors are very proud of themselves for surviving and for relentlessly trying to clear their leader's name.
I don't ever remember learning about the USS Indy when I was in school, or maybe I was to young to truly appreciate what heroic men and women of the "Greatest Generation" did for my generation and all generations.

It was LST 772’s destiny to serve in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, partake in the assault and occupation of Okinawa from April through June 1945, and carry out occupation duty in the Far East until December 1945.
Before decommissioning in 1946, LST 772 sailed 35,000 miles of ocean, visited 32 ports, made 35 beach landings, carried 2,911 military passengers, and off-loaded 4,899 tons of cargo.
As its aroma escaped through the vent on the engine room hatch, rolling on and up to the nostrils of officers and men on the bridge, it could not be explained, but it definitely provoked memories of home and Mom’s kitchen.

1943-The Coast Guard-manned USS LST-167 and the USS LST-334 with a partial Coast Guard crew landed troops during the invasion of Vella Lavella in the central Solomons despite fierce resistance from the Japanese defenders.
Japanese aircraft attacked the invasion fleet, hitting LST-167 with two bombs that killed 10 of her crew and wounded 10.
"Rescue 21" was planned to be the nation's primary maritime "911" system for coastal waters of the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, and navigable rivers and lakes within the United States.

Comments: I enjoy, being on the USS Ranger in the supply dept, S-8 div the only that i didn't like was the 121 days out to sea, I would do it all over again, If i had a chance.
The ship I was on was the USS Walton DE-361 and I was a RM2 and later made RM1 while I was still aboard and over in WESTPAC.
Especially considering our replacement...the USS Constellation, or USS Constipation as we were so fond of calling her.

World War II LST with ham radio aboard docks in US after transatlantic trip: Tank Landing Ship LST-325 has completed its 4200-mile journey from the Greek island of Crete to Mobile, Alabama.
Executive Officer Jack Carter, KC6WYX, using the WW2LST call sign of the USS LST Amateur Radio Club, has operated an onboard 100 W rig on 20-meter SSB throughout the voyage and worked several stations in the US and elsewhere along the way.
According to a report in Stars and Stripes, 29 sailors--men in their 60s, 70s and older--signed on, determined to deliver this ship to a permanent berth in Mobile to be used as a floating museum.

LST 473 was helpless and the ship and the men it carried were doomed by the incoming torpedo.

I called 911 to say I was leaving a bus in the rest area to return to Franklin in order to retrieve something very important that had been inadvertently left behind.
She first saw service as USS LST 510 that landed on Omaha Beach during the Battle of Normandy.
The loading and landing ramps were pretty steep and the overhead was barely over head enough.
