The most exciting things happening on the trip south were; on April 13, LST 334's steering went out and the 481 had to sheer to starboard to avoid a collision, after sounding four blasts on the whistle, and on the 16th when the same thing happened to our steering gear at 0055 in the morning.
Al Erickson, a crew member of LST 166, took a picture of the 481 as we were approaching the starboard side of 166 and through an astounding coincidence met former 481er John Higgins at the LST Association convention in Orlando, FL in September 1993.
LST 785 assumed formation guide at 0900 on October 20 while the 481 steered to starboard to make some repairs on the starboard engine, meanwhile keeping up with the formation on the outside of the column.
