  USS La Vallette (DD-315) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Vallette was laid down 14 April 1919 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, San Francisco, California; launched 15 July 1919; sponsored by Miss Nancy Lane, daughter of the Secretary of the Interior; and commissioned 24 December 1920, Lt. Cmdr.
In 1924 and 1927, La Vallette transited the Panama Canal for Caribbean maneuvers, participating in a presidential review by Calvin Coolidge 4 June 1927.
As early as 1922 La Vallette participated in antiaircraft training, and witnessed the growing importance of naval aviation while serving as plane guard for Lexington (CV-2) during the destroyer's final months of service.

La Vallette was laid down 27 November 1941 by Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Corp., Kearny, New Jersey; launched 21 June 1942; sponsored by Mrs.
La Vallette carried out escort and screening assignments during the Gilbert landings, and in strikes against Kwajalein and Wotje, during which she splashed another enemy aircraft.
Assigned to escort convoys during the first assaults on the Philippines, La Vallette had already left Leyte Gulf with a convoy bound to reload at Hollandia before the vast and decisive Battle of Leyte Gulf erupted; but she returned to the Philippines by 5 December, when she splashed a kamikaze in Surigao Strait.

USS LA VALLETTE was the fourth ship of the FLETCHER class to be laid down at the massive Federal Shipbuilding facility in Kearny, New Jersey.
La Valette was one of the first rear admirals appointed by President Abraham Lincoln when the new rank was created at the beginning of the Civil War.
USS LA VALLETTE first found herself in action with Japanese forces on January 29, 1943, when, while protecting Task Force 18 units off Guadalcanal, the new destroyer obliterated three attacking Japanese aircraft.

 USS La Vallette (DD-448) — The Battle of Rennell Island
Lt.(jg) (later Capt.) Chuck Witten, USN (Ret.) was La Vallette’s radar officer, navigator and “C” division officer in 1943, with a battle station in secondary gun control.
As we were slowly towed through the nets and into the harbor we saw that the other ships there, including some of the destroyers of DESRON 21, were manning their rails and cheering us as we inched along.
La Vallette was really lucky, as the ARD 5, a floating drydock which could handle us, had just arrived a few days before.

Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS La Vallette, named in honor of Rear Admiral Elie A. La Vallette (1790–1862), one of the first rear admirals appointed when President Abraham Lincoln created this rank in July 1862.
The first, La Vallette (DD-315), was a Clemson-class destroyer, launched in 1919 and scrapped in 1931.
The second, La Vallette (DD-448), was a Fletcher-class destroyer, launched in 1942 and struck in 1974.

The USS Hopewell had originally gone to the rescue of this stricken craft but enemy shells landing on the destroyer had killed many men, it stopped the rescue efforts and had to retreat, passing us with its dead readily visible.
In passing, another destroyer, USS La Vallette (DD-448) was ordered to finish firing at the still floating mines in the area we had left earlier, but the ship hit an uncut mine, opening a huge hole in its starboard side.
A second destroyer, USS Radford (DD 446) was dispatched to rescue it, but then, also hit a mine in the same forward fireroom, starboard side as the La Vallette.

He was born in Makow (at the time part of Russia, now in Poland) and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1905.
Rickover was commissioned as an ensign after graduation from the US Naval Academy in 1922, and served on the destroyer USS La Vallette (DD-315) and the battleship USS Nevada (BB-36) before attending Columbia University, where he earned the degree of Master of Science in Electrical Engineering.
It was commissioned in 1984, two years before the Admiral's death, making it one of the very few US Navy ships to be named for a living person.

Proceeded north to Rao Island then on course 340°(T) until contact was made with USS TAYLOR at Longitude 128-00.5 E, Latitude 02-38 N. Result of search was negative and returned to patrol station in APA area.
However, some fragments fell within 500 yards of FLETCHER and LA VALLETTE, caused by the simultaneous bombardment of the same area by Fire Support Unit "A", TG 77.2 from a position east of Point Gila.

Both the town of La Vallette and the WWII combat ship were named after Rear Admiral Elie La Vallette, who took command of the historic U.S.S. Constitution in 1825.
The original painting of the USS LaVallette was featured in special exhibits at the Charlestown Navy Yard Museum in 1983 and 1985, where the USS Constitution is now berthed and open to the public as a museum.

On 13 Oct 42, I-26 sank the Atlanta-class anti-aircraft cruiser USS Juneau, one of several ships damaged during the First Battle of Guadalcanal on the night of 12-13 Oct. This incident is infamous for the loss of the five Sullivan brothers.
The two were from the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) and had ditched their plane on 4 June during the Battle of Midway.

USS Chevalier, a 2050-ton Fletcher class destroyer, was built at Bath, Maine, and commissioned in July 1942.
Damaged on 5 July while helping to rescue the crew of the torpedoed USS Strong, she was under repair for much of the rest of that month.
After her surviving crewmen had been removed, she was scuttled by a torpedo from USS La Vallette.
