Lafayette continued to participate actively in movements for liberty and freedom not only in his native France but elsewhere in the world of his day.
Lafayette, her Gold Crew on board, departed on Patrol 24 in January 1971, returning in March to Rota whereupon the Blue Crew prepared for Patrol 25, departing in April and returning in June.
Lafayette lay in the yard for the remainder of 1972 and all of 1973, and ultimately emerged from her conversion work at Electric Boat ("schedule slippage [due to] work force dilution at these yards [Electric Boat and Newport News] which have high current and projected workload") on 7 November 1974.

USS LAFAYETTE was the lead ship of the Navy's LAFAYETTE - class of nuclear fleet ballistic missile submarines and the second ship in the Navy to bear the name.
Deactivated while still in commission on March 1, 1991, LAFAYETTE was decommissioned on August 12, 1991, and stricken from the Naval list on February 25, 1992.
As commander of France’s eastern Army, Lafayette was captured by the Austrians in August 1792.

Headquarters was onboard USS Proteus (AS-19), the resident submarine tender.
The base was slated to receive half of the oncoming Ohio Class SSBN's and to prepare the base for the support of the new boats and their larger missiles, it was decided to convert Subron 16's boats to the Trident 1 C4 missile.

USS Lafayette (SSBN-616), the lead ship of her class, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the Marquis de la Fayette.
She was launched 8 May 1962 sponsored by First Lady of the United States Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of the 35th President of the United States, and commissioned 23 April 1963 at Groton, Connecticut, with Commander P. Hannifin in command of the Blue Crew and Commander James T. Strong in command of the Gold Crew.
Lafayette departed Charleston 4 January 1964 for her first deterrent patrol in the Atlantic.

  SSBN-616 Lafayette-Class Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines - SSBN - United States Nuclear Forces
The first SSBN to undergo ERP was the USS James Madison (SSBN-627); the ERP was conducted at the Holy Loch, Scotland, tender refit site in September- November 1974.
Five additional SSBNs 629, 630, and 634 underwent a "pierside backfit" while three other SSBNs (627, 632, and 633) were backfitted during their normally-scheduled second shipyard overhauls.
USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635) was selected to fulfill this requirement and was deactivated on 16 September 1985, with missile tubes filled with concrete and tube hatches removed.

This is the USS Thresher, SSN 593, tragically lost in an implosion accident in 1963, carrying 16 officers, 96 enlisted men and 17 civilian technicians to their final resting place in 8500 feet of water.
This is the USS Permit, SSN 594 the first of a class by default; the Thresher was the actual beginning of the line, but with her sinking, the designation went to the next boat.
