USS Lapon (SSN-661), a Sturgeon-class submarine">Sturgeon-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the lapon, a scorpionfish of the Pacific coast of North America.
The contract to build her was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on 24 October 1963 and her keel was laid down on 26 July 1965.
Upon commissioning, Lapon reported to Commander, Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet for duty, with her homeport at Norfolk, Virginia.

Posted by: Jim at February 16, 2005 07:39 AM I went to sub school in New London, CT back in the late 60's and back then they had 2 kinds of nuke subs, FBM's (Fleet Ballistic Missile subs) with the nomenclature SSBN and Fast Attack boats with the nomenclature SSN.
All of the boats with names of US Presidents were always SSBN class, e.g., USS George Washington SSBN-598, USS Andrew Jackson SSBN-619, and USS Thomas Jefferson SSBN-618.
Boats in the Fast Attack class (SSN) were normally named after some sea-creature, e.g., USS Thresher SSN-593, USS Seawolf SSN-575 and USS Lapon SSN-661.
