On 19 November Leary became the first American ship to make (Measuring instrument in which the echo of a pulse of microwave radiation is used to detect and locate distant objects) radar contact with a (A submersible warship usually armed with torpedoes) U-boat.
Leary departed this duty 7 February 1943 for (State capital and largest city of Massachusetts; a major center for banking and financial services) Boston and a new area of service.
Leary now began transatlantic escort voyages to guard ever-increasing amounts of supplies from the United States to the (The largest inland sea; between Europe and Africa and Asia) Mediterranean.

USS Leary (DD-158) was a Wickes-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War II.
Leary was laid down by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation at Camden in New Jersey on 6 March 1918, launched on 18 December 1918 by Mrs.
Leary departed Boston 28 January 1920 for Guantanamo Bay on shakedown and training, then continued her training in northern waters before transiting the Panama Canal 22 January 1921 to join the Battle Fleet in the Pacific.

The fifth and final kill of the cruise was made on 1 November by one of Card's escorts.
Schenck (DD-159) sank U-645 in 45°20′ N 21°40′ W., but one of the other escorts Leary (DD 158) was sunk by the combined efforts of three submarines in 45°00′ N 22°00′ W.

On 14 May Bibb was en route to Iceland as the flagship of Task Unit 24.6.2 with the USS Leary (DD-158) and USS Badger (DD-126).
On the 6th Bibb, together with USS MacLeish (DD-220) was relieved of further escort duty and departed the convoy setting a course for Argentia, where she arrived on the 7th.
Escorted by USS Barry (APD-29) Bibb departed Norfolk on the 15th of February and arrived at Panama on the 22nd.

LT Clarence F. Leary, USNRF, X O of the USS CHARTON HALL, on 20JUL1918, entered the hold in an effort to save the ship and crew; he later died as a result of burns and smoke inhalation.
The first USS LEARY (DD-158) was launched on 18DEC1918; on Christmas Eve, 1943, while on convoy duty, she was hit by a torpedo and sunk.
The second USS LEARY was built by the Consolidated Steel Company at Orange, TX where her keel was laid on 11AUG1944; in June of 1945, the ship was converted from DD 897 to DDR879.

The USS Leary (DD 158) received one battle star for her WWII service.
At 05.05 hours, U-275 fired a Gnat at the USS Leary (DD 158) (Cmdr James E. Kyes, lost) and hit her on the starboard side in the after engine room.
The survivors were picked up by the USS Schenck (DD 159), which found U-645 (Ferro) later the same day, evaded a torpedo and sank the U-boat with depth charges.

USS Schenck (DD-159) was a Wickes-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War II.
Schenck continued her ASW operations and was later commended by the task group commander for her role in preventing a concentrated wolf pack attack on Card; for her continued aggressive action after the sinking of Leary, despite having only fourteen depth charges left; and for her skillful rescue of Leary's survivors.
In February and March 1944, Schenck made one more round-trip convoy voyage from the east coast to Casablanca; and, between 17 April and 10 June, she escorted Antaeus (AG-67) on troop-carrying voyages along the east coast.

Another amusing incident was when our group went aboard USS Mobile Bay when she was in Sydney a couple of years ago.
Also the first warship with radar was the Destroyer USS LEARY DD-158 in 1937.
All I've got to say is...I can't believe that 1/250 USS Arizona is made out of paper.
