USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644), a Benjamin Franklin-class ballistic missile submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
On 21 July 1972 Lewis and Clark completed conversion of her missile tubes to carry Poseidon C3 missiles instead of the Polaris A3 missiles she had originally been equipped with.
Lewis and Clark's sail and fair-water planes and the top of its rudder are now on display at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, part of a memorial to the officers and men of the Submarine Service that served during the Cold War.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804?1806) was the first United States overland expedition to the Pacific coast and back, led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark of the United States Army.
Lewis and Clark stayed separated until they reached the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 11.
Lewis had intended to spend the winter in St. Louis since he needed to gain provisions for the trip and it was too late in the year to sensibly continue on the Missouri.

USS Boston, a 3189-ton Atlanta class protected cruiser, was built at Chester, Pennsylvania, and commissioned in May 1887.
In June 1905 she represented the Navy at the Lewis and Clark Exposition at Portland, Oregon, and in April and May 1906 assisted with earthquake recovery efforts at San Francisco, California.

January 16, 1984 - USS CANOPUS (AS 34) commenced overhaul at Charleston Naval Shipyard, Charleston, S.C. This overhaul was to include reconfiguration to dual C-3/C-4 capability.
January 15, 1989 - USS TENNESSEE (SSBN 734), the first submarine to carry the TRIDENT II (D5) missile, arrived at her home port of Kings Bay, GA. USS TENNESSEE's ceremonial arrival marked the beginning of TRIDENT operations in the Atlantic fleet.

The submarine is constructed to accurate scale using segmented retaining wall stone for the hull, and with the actual sail, sail planes and rudder from the decommissioned FBM submarine USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN 644) mounted appropriately thereon.
As is the case with an actual submarine underway, there are no openings in the hull, and it is dangerous to climb on the hull.

When Maarek arrived at GBS 8 he found two Excelsior Class ships the USS Lewis and the USS Clark, both ships were completed, however never had a Warp Core installed.
After refitting these ships and the rest of the fleet; USS Atlantis (Sovereign Class), USS Camin (Olypmic Class Medical Frigate), USS Fury (Defiant Class), USS Sagan (Intrepid Class), USS Ankeny (Nebula Class) began to prepare the station for it's new mission.
The USS Storm (Akira Class), Commanded by Fleet Captain Stele became the Command ship of the fleet.

Arlow J. Webb, Y.2c, born Dec. 12, 1925, Richmond, UT. He entered the USN Feb. 13, 1943, and attended boot camp at USN Station Farragut, ID. He transferred to San Diego for Gunnery School and on to Whidbey Island, WA, to a PBY squadron.
He transferred to Bremerton, WA, for assignment to the USS West Virginia where he went through the war in the Pacific and in Tokyo Bay for the signing of peace on Sept. 2, 1945.
In May 1946 he was employed by Stauffer Chemical Co. and attended Lewis and Clark College, Portland, OR.
