Long Beach arrived back at the west coast on 4 July where, after a well‑deserved period of rest, she resumed the exercises and operations which would keep her well prepared for her return to Vietnam the following year.

On 15 February 1957, the name Long Beach was canceled in order that the name could be reassigned to a powerful nuclear guided-missile cruiser that was then under construction.

The USS BAINBRIDGE was commissioned on October 6, 1962.

She was 721 feet long with a loaded displacement of nearly 17,100 tons.
