The first USS United States, one of six frigates authorized by Congress on 27 March 1794, was designed by naval architect Joshua Humphreys[?] and Captain Thomas Truxtun[?].
While she was at Norfolk, Captain John S. Carden of the Royal Navy, commander of the new British frigate HMS Macedonian, wagered Captain Decatur a beaver hat that his vessel would take United States if the two should ever meet in battle.
Macedonian was subsequently purchased by the United States Navy, repaired, and had a long and honorable career under the American flag.

In January 1812, Macedonian was ordered to secretly deliver some bills ofexchange to Norfolk, Virginia, and to bring back an equivalentquantity of gold and silver specie, as part of a scheme to keep the Bank of England solvent.
Unfortunately for Macedonian, the United States was one of the new 44-gun frigates, and her broadside was864 pounds of metal, vs Macedonian's 528 pounds.

At a muster on the 28th it was determined that Macedonian had lost 36 killed, 36 severely wounded, many of whom were unlikely to recover, and 32 slightly wounded.
On 11 June 1826 Macedonian departed Norfolk for service on the Pacific station, returning to Hampton Roads, Va., 30 October 1828 where she was decommissioned.

HMS Macedonian has the distinction of being the only British warship captured and returned to an American port during the War of more powerful USS United States (44 guns) about 500 miles south of the Azores.
Purchased by the government and commissioned as USS Macedonian, in May 1813 she slipped out of New York with United States and the sloop Hornet; but the three ships were forced into New London, where they remained until war's end.

The name refers to any native or inhabitant of ancient Macedonia, comprising what is now northern Greece and parts of Bulgaria and Yugoslavia, but especially to Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia from 365 to 323 B.C. The second Macedonian, a 36-gun frigate, was named for the first.

HMS MACEDONIAN boar down to the attack in a heedless and confident manner, at which point the USS UNITED STATES opened fire from her long 24’s; almost every shot which struck the hull or masts of the attacking ship.
She was relieved by the USS CONSTELLATION and returned to the Atlantic seaboard in 1821.
