Kenneth MacLeish, USNR, was born in Glencoe, Ill., in 1894 and appointed ensign in the Naval Reserve Flying Corps 31 August 1917.
MacLeish (DD-220) was laid down 19 August 1919 by William Cramp and Sons of Philadelphia, Pa.; launched 18 December 1919; sponsored by Miss Isabel MacLeish, sister of Lt. Kenneth MacLeish; and commissioned 2 August 1920, Lt. Comdr.
Assigned to the eastern sea frontier, she was ready for sea by 1 February 1940 and engaged in maneuvers and patrol duty in the Caribbean before being rearmed in preparation for convoy duty.

USS MacLeish (DD-220/AG-87) was a Clemson-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War II.
MacLeish was laid down 19 August 1919 by William Cramp & Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; launched 18 December 1919; sponsored by Miss Isabel MacLeish, sister of Lt. Kenneth MacLelsh; and commissioned 2 August 1920, Lieutenant Commander F. Berry in command.
MacLeish remained in Asiatic and Pacific waters until 11 March 1938, when she decommissioned and entered the Reserve Fleet at San Diego, California.

The second USS Santee (CVE-29) (originally launched as AO-29, following reclassification as an escort aircraft carrier, was originally ACV-29) was launched on 4 March 1939 as Esso Seakay under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 3) by the Sun Shipbuilding and DryDock Co., at Chester, Pennsylvania; sponsored by Mrs.
Charles Kurz; acquired by the United States Navy on 18 October 1940; and commissioned on 30 October 1940 as AO-29, Commander William G. Hatch in command.
Underway again on 13 June, with four-stacked destroyers, Bainbridge (DD-246), Overton (DD-239), and MacLeish (DD-220), Santee reached Casablanca on 3 July.

The latter half of 1940 found the freighter in the neutral port of Tampico, Mexico, separated from the safety of German waters by the expanse of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, both filled with prowling Allied warships.
On December 7, 1940, the USS McCormick was ordered to relieve the Broome and keep the Rhein under surveillance as she steamed east towards the Florida Straits and the open Atlantic.
At 3:50 p.m., the Dutch man-of-war Van Kinsbergen, sailing under the British flag, was sighted by the MacLeish and informed of the approaching German freighter.

MacLeish (DD-220) was laid down 19 August 1919 by William Cramp and Sons Or Philadelphia, Pa.; launched 18 December 1919, sponsored by Mise Isabel MacLeish, sister of Lt. Kenneth MacLeish; and commissioned 2 August 1920, Lt. Comdr.
After brief duty with the Pacific Fleet, MacLeish sailed 5 June 1922 from Philadelphia to join the U.S. Naomi Forces in Turkish waters.
MacLeish remained in Adriatic and Pacific waters until 11 March 1938, when she decommissioned and entered the Reserve Fleet at San Diego, Calif.

He was a Pharmacist Mate aboard the Destroyer Escort USS Liddle, DE-206, later converted to the fast transport APD-60.
The USS Liddle was commissioned on December 6, 1943.
One year and a day after her commissioning she was hit by a Kamikaze during the Battle of Ormoc Bay in the Philippines, resulting in the death of 38 of her men and injuries to many more.

USS MacKenzie, a 1060-ton Little class destroyer built at San Francisco, California, was placed in commission in July 1919.
She became a training ship in April 1944 and, after World War II ended in Europe, was sold for scrapping.
USS MacKenzie was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander Alexander Slidell MacKenzie (1842-1867), who was killed in action on Formosa on 13 June 1867.

And let's not forget the Gulf of Tonkin and the torpedos that never were, used by Johnson to trigger the Vietnam war and which resulted in all those dead and wounded kids.
USS Maine was sunk by a coal bunker explosion.

 Trip Report: 05/26/01
Several U.S. warships were monitoring German shipping activities, recognizing the increased European hostilities, although at the time we were not at war with Germany.
The U.S. destroyers Simpson (DD-221) and MacLeish (DD-220), shadowed the Rhein as it sailed for home in December of 1940.
The Captain of the Rhein attempted to scuttle the ship by setting it afire, but before it sunk the British cruiser Caradoc joined the fray and placed several 6-inch shells into her superstructure while the USS MacLeish and USS McCormick (DD-223) witnessed the event.
