Essay: 40th Anniversary of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident
Photograph taken from USS Maddox (DD-731) during her engagement with three North Vietnamese motor torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin, 2 August 1964.
The naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox and several North Vietnamese torpedo boats occurred on August 2, 1964, in the immediate aftermath of a series of 34-A maritime raids on North Vietnamese coastal targets.
There were photographs of the North Vietnamese torpedo boats engaged in a fire-fight with the Maddox, Admiral Thomas H. Moorer retained a dud shell from one of the Vietnamese vessels as a souvenir, and numerous Maddox sailors confirmed sighting at least three torpedoes.

First, media descriptions of the August 2nd attack as an "unprovoked attack" against a U.S. destroyer on "routine patrol" hid the fact that the Maddox was providing support for South Vietnamese military operations against the North.
On August 4, a new DESOTO patrol to North Vietnam coast was launched by Maddox and the C. Turner Joy.
