USS Maddox (DD–168) was a Wickes class destroyer in the United States Navy during the World War I. She was later transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS Georgetown (I-40) and then to the Soviet Navy as Zhostki.
USS Maddox (DD-731), named for Captain William A. Maddox, USMC, (1814-1889), was an class destroyer laid down by the Bath Iron Works Corporation at Bath in Maine on 28 October 1943, launched on 19 March 1944 by Mrs.
Maddox's outspoken response to integration continued to be a catalyst for his political career, as evidenced by his 1957 campaign for mayor of Atlanta.

USS Maddox (DD—168) was a Wickes class destroyer in the United States Navy during the World War I.
Named for William A. Maddox, she was laid down 20 July 1918 by the Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Quincy, Massachusetts; launched 27 October 1918; sponsored by Mrs.
Assigned to Division 21, Atlantic Fleet, Maddox departed Boston 3 May 1919 for Trepassey, Newfoundland, en route to the Azores where she became part of a “bridge of ships” assigned to guide Navy flying boats NC-1 and NC-4 across the ocean on the first transatlantic flight.

The second MADDOX (DD-622) was one of the trim 1650 ton LIVERMORE (DD-423) class.
MADDOX was again deployed in the Western Pacific from 13 March 1964 to 2 October 1964.
MADDOX was on station in the South China Sea for a cumulative total of 82 days during the summer of 1964.

The battleship USS Colorado (BB-45) is damaged by an explosion, the destroyer USS Ammen (DD-527) by a horizontal bomber and the submarine chaser SC-737 by grounding, all in the Okinawa area.

 The USS Maddox
In 1836, William Maddox had served in the war with the Creeks and Seminole Indians as First Lieutenant, commanding a company of volunteers under General Jessup and on 14 October 1837 was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps from the State of Maryland.
The Maddox was assigned to the Third Fleet and she was badly damaged off Okinawa in 1944 by a bomb from a Japanese Kamikaze plane.
Maddox was once again deployed in the Western Pacific from 13 March 1964 until 2 October 1964, assigned to escort duty.

HMS Georgetown (ex-USS Maddox, DD-168) transferred at Halifax on 23 September 1940 and sailed for Britain six days later, but a collision with HMS Hamilton at St John's, NF returned her to Halifax for repair and she did not finally arrive at Devonport until 13 November 1940.
Her first escort duty was to escort convoy WS18, and then the aircraft carriers HMS Eagle and USS Wasp en-route to Gibralter for Operation BOWERY (the transfer of RAF Spitfires to Malta) after which she returned to the Clyde for a further four weeks repair.
She was returned in tow from Murmansk to Rosyth and handed over on 9 September 1952, passing at once to the shipbreakers and arriving at Inverkeithing on 16 September 1952 to be broken up by T W Ward.

Maddox, Destroyer No. l68, was laid down 20 July 1918 by the Fore River Shipbuilding Co., Quincy, Mass.
On 17 July l920 she was designated DW168.
After brief duty on mid-Atlantic neutrality patrol, she departed Newport, R.I., 16 September 1940 for Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she decommissioned 23 September 1940.

Whether or not the USS Maddox was in international waters remains a mystery for the U.S. claimed that the USS Maddox was within ten or less miles of offshore islands five times between 31 Jul 64 and the first Tonkin Gulf incident on 2 Aug 64.
On August 4, 1964, Maddox and USS C. Turner Joy reported a second attack, this one occurring within 17 hours of 34-Alpha raids on North Vietnamese facilities at Cap Vinh Son and Cua Ron.
The Israeli attack on the USS Liberty was a grievous error, largely attributable to the fact that it occurred in the midst of the confusion of a full-scale war in 1967.
