USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN-658), a Benjamin Franklin-class ballistic missile submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.
Mariano G. Vallejo conducted shakedown and training exercises along the West Coast, in the Caribbean Sea, and off the coast of Florida.
Mariano G. Vallejo was decommissioned on 9 March 1995 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 9 March 1995.

Mariano G. Vallejo, born 7 July 1808 at Monterey, Calif., entered the Monterey Presidial Academy in 1823.
Appointed Secretary to the Governor of California in 1825, he later served as Commander of the Presidio at San Francisco, and in 1836 was appointed Commandante General and Director of Colonization of the Northern Frontier, the highest military command in northern California.

Prior to that event, the vessel is referred to as "USS Name," but afterward the "USS" is dropped and it is referred to as "ex-Name." Defueling of submarines is carried out at five ship repair facilities on the West Coast, and the hulks are then towed to PSNS.
Reusable equipment is removed at the same time as the fuel.

The number of submarines being supported by SUBRON 14 varied over the years and the measure of that is that on 2 April 1987 the 2500th Ballistic Missile Deterrent Patrol was completed by USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN-658).
USS Proteus remained at the Holy Loch until January 1963, when she was relieved by USS Hunley (AS-31) (Hunley was stationed in the Holy Loch 1963-1966 and again 1982-1987).
USS Simon Lake was recognized in October 1988 as the best tender in the Atlantic Fleet with the award of the coveted Battle ‘E’ for Efficiency.

Every SSBN has two complete crews, a Blue crew and a Gold crew.
Even more advanced Trident I missiles, from 1979 onward, could be accommodated on the last 12 of the original 41 SSBNs.

The Submarine Tender USS Proteus (AS 19) arrived on 3 March 1961, with Squadron 14.
The USS Simon Lake was recognised in October 1988 as the best tender in the Atlantic Fleet with the award of the coveted ‘E’ for Efficiency.
A sad postscript is that Laurel Clark, who worked at the base between 1989 and 1992 went on to become one of the astronauts flying in the doomed Columbia shuttle which broke up on re-entry to earth’s atmosphere early in 2003.
