USS MAURY was the second ship of the GRIDLEY class to be laid down at Bethlehem Shipbuilding's Union yard outside San Francisco, one of two ships to match the twin GRIDLEYs that had been completed in the company's Quincy (MA) yard during the previous year.
CDR Maury was a giant in the study of the ocean.
USS MAURY was assigned immediately to the Pacific fleet upon commissioning and she served for three years with the Battle Force prior to World War II.

 DANFS: USS Maury (AKA-36)
Matthew Fontaine Maury, astronomer and hydrographer, was born in Spotsylvania County, Va., 14 January 1806.
In 1958 Maury returned to the Mediterranean for an abbreviated deployment, 3 February to 9 May. In July her North Atlantic resurvey missions were extended and she crossed the ocean to chart the waters in and around the Shetland and Faroe Islands.
By September she was ready to extend that survey to the Turkish Black Sea coast and on the 17th and 18th transited the Dardanelles.

 USS Maury (DD-401) — DANFS History
The second Maury (DD-401) was laid down 24 March 1936 by Union Plant, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., San Francisco, Calif.; launched 14 February 1938; sponsored by Miss Virginia Lee Maury Werth, granddaughter of Commander Maury, and commissioned 5 August 1938, Lt. Comdr.
At the end of August 1943, she departed for San Pedro and in 6-week availability period, returning to the combat area with TF 52 to support the invasions of Tarawa and Makin in the Gilberts 20 November.
Early in 1944 Maury joined TF 53, the fast carrier force, and put out to sea 19 January to screen the "flattops" as their planes raided Wotje, Taroa, Eniwetok, and the Palaus.

Maury operated with Enterprise during the Battle of Midway in early June, the invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi in early August 1942, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons later in that month, and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in October.
As the campaign to hold Guadalcanal approached its climax, Maury was assigned to a cruiser-destroyer force tasked with blocking Japanese attempts to reinforce their troops ashore.

On 30 April TF 16, with Maury in the screen of the heavier ships, sortied from Pearl Harbor to aid Yorktown and Lexington in the Battle of the Coral Sea.
Early in 1944 Maury Joined TF 5S, the fast carrier force, and put out to sea 19 January to screen the "flattops" as their planes raided Wotje, Taroa, Eniwetok, and the Palaus.
Maury spent most of November cruising the waters east of the Philippines in support of operations on Leyte and Samar.

My brother, GM3/C Daniel G. Gama served on the U.S.S. Maury DD 401 from late December 1941 through to the end of WWII.
The Maury was one of the most decorated ship in the Pacific.

USS Honolulu had some trouble locating its target at first, but that problem was solved soon, and her fire became so rapid thet everyone topside was blinded by the muzzle flashes.
USS Maury has been able to fire 71 rounds when she suffered the electrical short circuit in the fire control radar that ended her participation in the gun fight.
USS Honululu was the only US cruiser that did not receive any damage, and that was still able to steer and fight.

 USS Mullinnix DD-944 - Ship Pictures
Ship’s Cook 3rd Class Doris "Dorie" Miller assigned to the USS West Virginia on 3 August 1941 and was serving in that battleship when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December, 1941.
Assigned to the newly constructed USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56) in the spring of 1943, Miller was on board that escort carrier during Operation Galvanic, the seizure of Makin and Tarawa Atolls in the Gilbert Islands.
The USS Wiltsie (DD-716), launched on 31 August 1945, was named for Irving D. Wiltsie, commander of the LISCOME BAY, the flagship of Rear Admiral Henry M. Mullinnix, during her final battle off Makin in the Gilbert Islands.

 USS Vella Gulf (CG 72)
USS VELLA GULF is the last but one TICONDEROGA class cruiser and like the other TICONDEROGA-class cruisers (except CG 51) she is named after a famous American Battle.
As part of the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) Carrier Battle Group (CVBG), and in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, USS VELLA GULF set sail in support of defense and humanitarian efforts off the coast of New York.
The operation began on the morning of 6 August 1943 on board the USS DUNLAP, where the captains of six destroyers met with Commander Task Group 31.2, Commander Frederick Moosbrugger, to discuss the 'Battle Plan.' The group was designed in two division of three destroyers each.

On April 5, 1918, he reported as executive officer off the newly commissioned USS Princess Matoika, and by October, he was temporarily promoted to commander.
Following duty there, he also commanded USS Somers, USS Bruce and USS Maury, which was attached to the mine force.
He commanded USS Altair in 1954 and was promoted to captain in November, 1954.

On 2/1/42 the Maury, Chester and Balch attacked the Island of Maleatrop (sp?)in the Marshall Group, along with the Enterprise and Yorktown, aircraft carriers.
The Maury and Balch each sank a Japanese patrol vessel and "drew their first blood." "In this action I saw a most spectacular shooting down of a huge Jap bomber by a fighter plane from the Enterprise.

The operation began early on 6 August 1943, onboard the USS DUNLAP (DD 384), where the captains of six destroyers met with Commander, Task Group 31.2, Commander Frederick Moosbrugger, to discuss the battle plan.
USS DUNLAP (DD 384), USS CRAVEN (DD 382) and USS MAURY (DD 401) comprised Division ABLE ONE.
Contrary to accepted practice at the time, CDR Moosbrugger planned to have ABLE ONE attack with torpedoes first and direct ABLE TWO to attack with guns and torpedoes after the initial attack was complete.

 USS Maury (DD-401), Gridley-class destroyer
One of four 1500-ton destroyers of the Gridley class, Maury was laid down 24 March 1936 by Union Plant, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., San Francisco, California and sponsored at her commissioning by Miss Virginia Lee Maury Werth, granddaughter of Commander Maury.
In November 1942, as the campaign to hold Guadalcanal approached a climax, Maury was assigned to Task Force 67, assigned to block Japanese attempts to reinforce their troops ashore.
On 30 November, this force of five cruisers and destroyers Fletcher, Drayton, Maury and Perkins in the van, with hastily attached Lamson and Lardner in the rear, surprised eight Japanese destroyers in the Battle of Tassafaronga, yet lost one cruiser with three others badly damaged by torpedoes—Maury was not hit.

USS Commodore Maury, 79 gross ton patrol vessel and mine sweeper, was built in 1894 by John Roach of Chester, Pennsylvania, as a fishing vessel.
Owned by the Fish Commission of the Commonwealth of Virginia, she was taken over by the Navy for World War I service and placed in commission in April 1917.
After serving in the waters of the Fifth Naval District nearly until the end of the conflict, she was returned to her owner in late October 1918.

I was stationed on the USS Edisto AGB2 in 1958, 1959.

What the author did add was that prior to the battle at Vella Gulf, he insisted that the Maurie's torpedo depth settings be set to mininum to compensate for faulty controls.
In addition to his eye witness knowledge as Gunnery Officer and XO aboard USS MAURY(DD-401), CAPT Crenshaw is apparently an expert in Naval Science.

Need information whether or not it docked into a Vietnam port and whether or not my father took leave, was part of a shore party and what was the cargo if any that was carried aboard it within the time frame.
Message is: John You may not remember me, but I wanted to say I remember you as a very personable storekeeper on board the USS Current in Pearl Harbor.

Believed to be USS Hart at anchor in Nanking on the Yangtzee River, although the number on side would suggest it is USS Ford.
Here is a photo of the USS Kilty (DD 137) that my wife's grandfather brought home from the war.
Unfortunately the story of what really happened with this ship is not nearly as exciting as the one that came down through the family, but hopefully this pic will be of assistance.
