The first USS Mercy (AH-4) was a hospital ship in the United States Navy during World War I.
Mercy was built in 1907 as Saratoga by William Cramp and Sons, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the Ward Line, New York, New York.
After use as a Army troop transport during the first nine months of World War I, she was purchased by the Navy from the US War Department on 27 September 1917.

Three hospital ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Mercy, in honor of the virtue of compassion.
The first Mercy (AH-4) was built in 1907 as Saratoga and was commissioned USS Mercy on 24 January 1918.
The third USNS Mercy (T-AH-19) was commissioned in 1986 and served during the Gulf War (1990-91).

Assigned to the Atlantic Fleet, Mercy operated in the Chesapeake Bay area with Yorktown, Va., as her home port, attending the war wounded and transporting them from ships to shore hospitals.
Mercy remained in commission until loaned to the Philadelphia branch of the Public Relief Administration 23 March 1934.
On 20 April 1938 Mercy was struck from the Navy list and she was sold for scrapping to Boston Iron and Metals Co., Baltimore, Md., 16 March 1939.

The USNS Mercy, sister hospital ship to USNS Comfort is schedule to sail for the Gulf Coast on Wednesday October 5 to add a second sustainalble, selfcontained hospital facility to support Hurricane Katrina relief.
The USS Truman will add her massive flight deck, supply and command and control capabilities to that of the six amphibious ships also soon to be on station.
The hospital ship USS Comfort, whose sister ship USS Mercy treated over 100,000 patients in support of last years tsunami, is also on the way to provide ongoing medical support.

Washington, DC, Apr. 15 (UPI) -- The military hospital ship USS Mercy has treated 700 patients in the past month in Nias, an Indonesian island ravaged by a major earthquake in late March.
The Mercy staff of U.S. military and humanitarian relief medical workers has done 48 major surgeries on the ship, many of them orthopedic.
During the tsunami mission the Mercy staff treated 9,000 out-patients in Banda Aceh, carried out 285 surgeries, conducted 1,758 radiological tests, filled more than 5,000 prescriptions and gave out almost 5,000 sets of eyeglasses.

The first training ship of the SUNY Maritime College, founded in 1874 as the New York Nautical School, was the sloop USS ST. MARY'S. In 1907, with the advent of modern technology, the ship was replaced by the gunboat USS Newport, which was in turn replaced in 1931 by EMPIRE STATE (I).
The USS Empire State, which served as a training ship for the New York State Maritime Academy from 1931 through 1946, was the former USS PROCYON (AG-11).
