USS Minneapolis–Saint Paul (SSN-708), a Los Angeles-class submarine, was the first vessel of the United States Navy to be named for the metropolitan area of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota, although each city had been honored twice before.
The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut on 31 October 1973 and her keel was laid down on 20 January 1981.
While Minneapolis-St. Paul was the first vessel named for the Twin Cities as a whole, she is the third ship to be named for Minneapolis as well as the third to be named for St.

The Takanami was hit by shells and sank but the American torpedoes missed and the gun flashes lit up the American ships and provided a clear target for the Japanese squadron, which quickly replied with twenty torpedoes of their own and turned to escape in the darkness.
The American ships failed to manoeuvre to avoid the long lances and Minneapolis was hit by two 24-inch torpedoes, New Orleans was hit by one torpedo which severed her bow, Pensacola was also torpedoed and damaged but Northampton received two hits which caused her to sink later.

USS Minneapolis, a 7375-ton protected cruiser built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in December 1894.
Minneapolis, whose powerful engines made her an expensive ship to run, was mainly in reserve from 1898 to 1917.

One of the most decorated U.S. Navy cruisers during World War II in the Pacific, the heavy cruiser Minneapolis (CA-36) was awarded 16 battle stars for actions ranging from the Gilbert and Marshall Islands raid early in 1942 to the assault on Okinawa in April 1945.
ARTHUR D. Damage control allowed the hurt Minneapolis to limp at 3 knots into Sasapi Harbor, Tulagi, where she was moored to palm trees and tree stumps and camouflaged with foliage.
The Minneapolis began her voyage home for final repairs on 7 January 1943 but soon experienced problems that delayed her departure until 10 February, when, in the company of other damaged warships, the cruiser began a 9.5-knot voyage to Pearl Harbor.

My Grandfather served in the USS New Orleans (CA-32) from the time he first joined the Navy in June 1940, up until late November 1942, when the New Orleans got its bow shot off up to the base of turret #2 by a Japanese Torpedo and subsequent Magazine explosion, at the Battle of Tassafaronga.
During that time, he was involved in everything from the Pearl Harbor attack, the Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, etc. After the New Orleans returned Stateside for a new bow, my Grandpa then served the rest of the war on the USS Essex (CV-9).
