Missouri joined the fast battleships of TF 58 in bombarding the southeast coast of Okinawa 24 March 1945, an action intended to draw enemy strength from the west coast beaches that would be the actual site of invasion landings.
Missouri rejoined the screen of the carriers as Marine and Army units stormed the shores of Okinawa on the morning of 1 April.
Missouri is not eligible for designation as a National Historic Landmark, even though she is the last completed U.S. battleship and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 for hosting the signing of the instrument of Japanese surrender that ended World War II.

The USS Missouri was launched on January 29, 1944, commissioned on June 11 of the same year, and reported for duty to the Third Fleet in Pearl Harbor on Christmas Eve 1944.
In 1992, the USS Missouri was decommissioned for the second time, and in 1995 she was removed from the Navy's ship registry, enabling her to be donated by the Navy for preservation as a memorial museum.
After intense competition, the USS Missouri Memorial Association was selected by the Navy to care for the "Mighty Mo" at Pearl Harbor, and in 1998 title to the ship was transferred to the Association, and the "Mighty Mo" was brought to Pearl Harbor.
