Moberly (PF‑63), originally designated as PG‑171, was reclassified PF‑63 on 15 April 1943; laid down as Scranton under Maritime Commission contract by Globe Shipbuilding Co., Superior, Wis., 3 November 1943; launched 26 January 1944; sponsored by Mrs.
Moberly operated between Boston and New York until 31 July when she sailed with three other frigates for the Pacific.
Moberly returned to the west coast early in April 1946 and subsequently served in the 13th Naval District.

The Coast Guard-manned frigate USS Moberly (ex-Scranton) was built by the Globe Shipbuilding Company of Superior, Wisconsin, and ferried down the Mississippi River to New Orleans and thence to Houston, Texas, where she arrived on September 5, 1944, where work on the frigate was completed.
She proceeded to Bermuda on December 23, 1944, for shakedown the Moberly arrived at Philadelphia on January 29, 1945, for post-shakedown availability.
Moberly has just fired a hedgehog pattern as the charges drop in a circular pattern ahead of the frigate.

I believe he was on the USS Arthur Middleton, from a news clipping (undated, from a central PA newspaper) and PR shot of him w/ Jack Dempsey (the fighter).
I have found a cruise book from the 1936 maneuvers of the USS Louisville which he was assigned and an all fl sailor basic training photograph from Norfolk when he graduated from basic training.
I came aboard the USS Macon in Oct. 1947 and was there for abbout 15 months I was on the boxing team during that time.Love to hear from anyone that was a shipmate.

At about noon, the ship was suddenly torn in two amidships by an unknown explosion, with only 13 of its 67-man crew surviving.
This also makes it the Navy’s biggest single combat loss in New England waters.
