USS Nathanael Greene (SSBN-636), a James Madison-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for Major General Nathanael Greene, who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Neander W. Wade, a descendent of General Nathanael Greene, and commissioned on 19 December 1964 with Commander Robert E. Crispin in command of the Blue Crew and Commander William M. Cossaboom in command of the Gold Crew.
Nathanael Greene's grounding was the first serious accident involving an American nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, but her removal from from service allowed the United States to easily comply with the missile limits of the SALT II Treaty.

Nathanael Greene was born 27 July 1742 at Warwick, R.I. An iron founder by trade, he served in the Rhode Island Assembly and in the Kentish Guards.
Appointed Brigadier General by the Rhode Island Assembly, and Major General in the Continental Army, he was given command of a detachment of militia at the siege of Boston and was charged with protecting that city after the British withdrawal.

This was the first ever reunion of the USS Nathanael Greene but those present vowed it would not be the last as the crew officially elected Tom Carr and John Trubee as the Nathanael Greene Reunion Committee chairpersons.

1986 - USS NATHANAEL GREENE (SSBN-636) ran aground in the Irish Sea, suffering external damage to her ballast tanks and rudder.
A spokesman for the U.S. Navy said "There was no effect on the propulsion, no injuries and no damage to the Poseidon nuclear missiles." The submarine initially sailed to Holy Loch, Scotland, under her own power for emergency repairs.
Roosevelt was part of the USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) and was taking part in a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), which is an intermediate level training exercise, designed to forge ships in the Kennedy CSG into a cohesive fighting team.

Submarine building proceeded at a furious pace in the early 1960s, as the United States strove to deploy a major component of its Strategic Triad.
From 1960 to 1966 the U.S. Navy launched a total of 41 SSBNs, called the "41 for Freedom." All were named for eminent figures in American history and divided among the 5 ship Washington Class, the 5 ship Ethan Allen class, the 19 ship Lafayette Class and the 12 ship Franklin Class.
Initially, each boat carried 16 Polaris nuclear missiles that could be launched underwater toward distant targets.
