 USS Nevada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The third Nevada (BB-36) was a battleship, commissioned in 1916, damaged in the attack on Pearl Harbor (1941), painted orange and used as the target for Operation Crossroads in 1946, and finally sunk for practice in 1948.
At least four ships of the United States Navy have borne the name Nevada, after the 36th state.
The second Nevada (BM-8) was a monitor, commissioned in 1902, renamed to Tonopah in 1909, and sold in 1922.

The third NEVADA (BB 36), a 583-foot, 27,500-ton battleship, began her long and distinguished career in 1916.
Nevada was authorized in FY 1980; laid down by Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Co., Groton, CT 8 August 1983; launched 14 September 1985; sponsored by Mrs.
At that time NEVADA and several of her sister ships were transferred from the fleet to duty at the Naval Academy.

USS Nevada, first of a class of two 27,500-ton battleships, was built at Quincy, Massachusetts.
After two years of inactivity, USS Nevada was towed to sea off the Hawaiian islands and sunk by gunfire and torpedos.
She was commissioned in March 1916 and operated in the western Atlantic and the Caribbean until mid-1918, when she went to the British Isles for World War I service.

The Nevada was rearmed in 1944 with ten 356mm guns in two triple turrets and two twin mounts.
However her sister ship the USS Oklahoma took four torpedo hits and went turtle (She rolled over) making it almost imposable for her crew to get out.

USS ROSS (DDG 71), the twenty-first Arleigh Burke class destroyer, is named in honor of Captain Donald Kirby Ross, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions aboard USS NEVADA (BB-36) on December 7, 1941.
As a junior Warrant Officer onboard USS NEVADA, Ross earned the Medal of Honor for "extraordinary courage and disregard of his own life during the attack on the Fleet at Pearl Harbor" on December 7, 1941, according to the citation accompanying his award.
His heroism during the attack is recalled by the inverted silver star which stands for the Medal of Honor he won for valor on board the battleship USS NEVADA.
