  USS Newark (CL-108) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The United States Navy Fargo-class light cruiser USS Newark (CL-108) was scrapped prior to completion.
Newark was laid down 17 January 1944, but her construction was cancelled 12 August 1945, when 67.8% completed.
However, the hulk was launched in December 1945 for use in underwater explosion tests.

The first USS Newark (C-1) was a United States Navy protected cruiser, the first modern cruiser in the US fleet.
She was laid down by William Cramp and Sons, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 12 June 1888, launched 19 March 1890, sponsored by Miss Annie Boutelle, daughter of Congressman Boutelle of Maine, and commissioned 2 February 1891, Captain Silas Casey in command.
Arriving Tientsin 22 May, Newark operated in that port and out of Taku and Chefoo, protecting American interests and aiding the relief expedition under Vice Admiral Seymour, R.N., until sailing at the end of July for Kure, Japan, and then Cavite where she hoisted the pennant of the Senior Squadron Commander in the Philippines.

Only one commissioned ship of the United States Navy has borne the name Newark, after the town of Newark, New Jersey.
In 1942, CL-100 was to be a light cruiser named Newark, but it was converted to a light aircraft carrier and eventually launched as the San Jacinto (CVL-30).
Another light cruiser Newark (CL-108) was cancelled in August 1945 before completion, although the hull was later launched and used for tests.

The Daily Telegraph announces that its warship, the USS Newark, is the flagship of Rear-Admiral Kempff, and now occupies a post of honour at Taku in view of the disturbances in China.
In Newark the joyous observances will partake of a two-fold character, being not only in honour of the day but in celebration of the relief of Mafeking with fitting tribute to those who were its heroic defenders.
The secretary of the Newark branch of the society, Mrs Anderson, was commended for her efforts in co-ordinating the many generous contributions made by the people of the town.

The first Newark, a protected cruiser, was laid down by William Cramp and Sons, Philadelphia, Pa., 12 June 1888 launched 19 March 1890, sponsored by Miss Annie Boutelle, daughter of Congressman Boutelle of Maine, and commissioned 2 February 1891, Captain Silas Casey in command.
Putting out from Genoa on the 25th, Newark cruised the Mediterranean and the Adriatic, visiting many ports until arriving 11 Februaty 1893 at Cadiz to take in tow a full size reproduction of caravel Nina and sailing on the 18th for home.
Newark decommissioned 16 June and was stricken from the Navy List 26 June.

After the war, Newark decommissioned 15 May 1919 and was sold 19 May 1919.
The Cleveland class light cruiser Newark (CL-100) was reclassified CV-30 on 2 June 1942 and was renamed Reprisal 23 June 1942.

1-19, 1903— Marines from the cruiser USS Atlanta landed to guard the U.S. Consulate at Santo Domingo during an insurrection in the Dominican Republic.
7-13, 1903 — USS Brooklyn (ACR 3) landed a party of Sailors and Marines at Beirut, in the Turkish province of Syria (present-day Lebanon), to protect U.S. citizens and the American University during a brief period of political demonstrations.
A force of 300 bluejackets and Marines from cruisers USS Columbia (C 12) and USS Newark (C 1), commanded by LCDR James P. Parker, landed under covering fire from the USS Newark to expel the Dominican rebels from the city.

USS Newark, a 4083-ton protected cruiser, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and commissioned in February 1891.
Newark returned to the east coast by way of the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean in 1901, and commenced five years' duty in the western Atlantic and Caribbean areas.
Stricken from the Navy List in June 1912, Newark was transferred to the Public Health Service for use as a quarantine ship.

On 18 April 1900, the general was transferred from the Baltimore to the USS Oregon, and on 24 May of the same year he was detached to the USS Newark.
The general (by then a lieutenant colonel) was detached from the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, in June 1916, when he was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet as Fleet Marine Officer and counter-intelligence officer on the staff of its commander.
Serving in those capacities for most of World War I, he was stationed aboard the USS Wyoming until October 1916, and on the USS Pennsylvania from then until August 1918, when he took command of the Marine Barracks at Parris Island, South Carolina.

The USS WALLER, a flush-deck destroyer of the FLETCHER Class and an answer to Japan's 2,000 ton KAGERO Class ship, was launched in the yards of the Federal Ship Building and Dry Dock Company, Kearny, New Jersey, August 15, 1942.
The USS WALLER's keel was laid on the 12th of February, 1942 and she was placed in commission August 15th of the same year with Lieutenant Commander L. Frost, USN, assuming first command of the ship.
In January 1943, the WALLER moved into the Pacific area and underwent her first baptism of fire near Guadalcanal on the 29th of the same month when enemy torpedo bombers came in at dusk to attack the small task force with which she was operating.
