  Battle of Lake Erie
The Battle of Lake Erie was fought on September 10, 1813, during the War of 1812.
However, Perry was able to transfer command to the USS Niagara, a ship equal in size and strength to the Lawrence, but which had not yet been engaged in the battle.
After the battle, Perry sent his famous message to General William Henry Harrison, "We have met the enemy and they are ours." Due to the outcome of the battle, Britain retreated from Detroit and lost control of Lake Erie for the remainder of the war.

 USS Niagara
The first Niagara was built at Presque Isle (Erie), Pa., by Adam and Noah Brown under the supervision of Sailing Master Daniel Dobbins and Captain Oliver H. Perry, and was launched early in the summer of 1813.
Niagara and the other ships of Perry's squadron were held at Erie both by British blockade and leek of crews, until 1 August, when the British squadron retired.
From her deek he regrouped his squadron and eame down through the enemy line, Niagara pouring broadsides into the British ships until victory was secured, and with it control of Lake Erie, freeing the upper lakes from the threat of invasion.

Beginning in 1913, the year of the Centennial Celebration, the Niagara was raised from her aquatic grave beneath the waters of Misery bay and after being restored, was towed by the USS Wolverine throughout the Great Lakes region.
The Niagara was eventually moved to a dry berth along State Street where the venerable lady awaited her rebirth.
The Niagara remained at her State Street berth until it was dismantled in 1987 when the vessel was rebuilt once again and returned to sail the Great Lakes and the waters beyond.

USS Chesapeake, a 36-gun frigate of 1244 tons, was built at the Gosport Navy Yard, at Portsmouth, Virginia.
She was commissioned in early August 1813 and quickly began operations with a voyage to Detroit in search of the opposing British squadron.
USS Lawrence, first of a two-ship class of 400-ton destroyers built at Weymouth, Massachusetts, was commissioned in April 1903.

The most important person to remember in the history of the U.S. Brig NIAGARA is her relief commander during the Battle of Lake Erie, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.
The new commander watched Niagara approach his bow and decided the best course of action was to swing his ship around so that his starboard cannon, unused up to that time, could be brought into action.
Niagara is now on display in Erie, Pa. Detroit was sent over Niagara Falls in 1841 as part of a public spectacle.

Van Rensselaer planned to cross the narrow Niagara River and capture Queenston and its heights, a towering escarpment that ran perpendicular to the river south of the town.
The expedition against Montreal in the fall of 1813 was one of the worst fiascoes of the war.

On June 1, 1813, the frigate USS Chesapeake was captured by the British frigate HMS Shannon, a vessel of equal size, as it attempted to leave Boston Harbor, and this somewhat counterbalanced the moral effect of previous disasters.

In that battle, the U.S. squadron consisting of Lawrence, Niagara, and 7 smaller vessels captured the British squadron (HMS Detroit, HMS Charlotte, and 4 smaller vessels, apparently the only time in history an entire squadron of the Royal Navy has been captured intact.
This flag is best known as having flown aboard USS Chesapeake when it fought (and was captured by) HMS Shannon on June 1, 1813, and aboard USS Essex on March 28, 1814, when it was captured by HMS Phoebe and HMS Cherub off the coast of Chile.

During the early months of 1799, the frigate USS General Greene was in the process of fitting out for service against France following the "X,Y,Z affair," and her captain, Christopher Perry, recommended his son for one of the coveted midshipman appointments.
During that period Perry served on such famous ships as the USS Adams, USS Constellation, USS Nautilus, USS Essex, and USS Constitution, but he was not involved in any of the memorable engagements of those little known wars.
Perry's flagship, the USS Lawrence, was incapacitated, but he went back and got the smaller USS Niagara, transferred the flag that read "Don't Give Up The Ship," (honoring the last words of Capt. James Lawrence of the USS Chesapeake) then went back and beat the British ships under the command of Capt. Robert Heriot Barclay.
