North Carolina completed her shakedown in the Caribbean prior to the Pearl Harbor attack, and after intensive war exercises, entered the Pacific 10 June 1942.
North Carolina sent both sailors and members of her Marine Detachment ashore for preliminary occupation duty in Japan immediately at the close of the war, and patrolled off the coast until anchoring in Tokyo Bay 5 September to reembark her men.
During the assault on Saipan, North Carolina not only gave her usual protection to the carriers, but starred in bombardments on the west coast of Saipan covering minesweeping operations, and blasted the harbor at Tanapag, sinking several small craft and destroying enemy ammunition, fuel, and supply dumps.

On Tuesday, 15 Sept. 1942, USS Wasp (CV 7) and USS Hornet (CV 8), along with USS North Carolina (BB 55) and 10 other warships, were escorting transports carrying the 7th Marine Regiment to Guadalcanal as reinforcements.
USS Lansdowne was directed to sink the burning hulk, and she fired five torpedoes into the dying ship’s hull.
The abandonment took nearly 40 minutes; and at 1600 — satisfied that no one was left on deck, in the galleries, or in the hangar aft — Capt. Sherman swung over the lifeline on the fantail and slid into the sea.

The first U.S. battleship commissioned since 1923, USS North Carolina received so much attention during her trials that she earned the nickname "Showboat." Closely involved in the invasion of Guadalcanal, she took an active part in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons on August 23-25.
Decommissioned in 1947, "Showboat" remained in reserve until 1961, when she was transferred to the State of North Carolina for use as a naval memorial and museum in Wilmington.
From November 1943 through May 1944, North Carolina supported carrier forces in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, and the Allied landings at Hollandia, New Guinea.

As NORTH CAROLINA sailors and officers on the bridge looked at us they saw devastation they never expected, as pictures had been very limited in the news as to what had happened in Pearl.
As I stood there on that small tug with sixteen other members watching NORTH CAROLINA come down the channel - this beautiful ship and the hundreds of men aboard her brought a ray of hope that we were going to come back.
NORTH CAROLINA finally left for the Pacific in the summer of 1942.
