USS Peleliu was christened Jan. 6, 1979, by Margaret Hayward, wife of former Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Thomas B. Hayward.
USS Peleliu is the first U.S. Navy ship to carry the name Peleliu, and the second ship named in honor of the World War II battles fought in the Palau Islands.
Most of the events USS Peleliu and her crew participated in during this initial transit were "firsts" and the underway refueling with USNS Taluga was no exception, occurring on June 8th.

USS Ogden (LPD-5), a Austin-class amphibious transport dock, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the city in Utah, which in turn was named for Peter Skene Ogden, Canadian explorer and fur trader.
Ogden was laid down on 4 February 1963 by the New York Naval Shipyard.
After training off Norfolk, Ogden arrived in San Diego 29 October 1965 to join the Pacific Fleet and complete her initial training.

The principal elements of the seal of the city of Ogden are a beehive mounted on a stand, and a number of bees flying about the hive which is flanked by two flowers.
It also shows OGDEN's air and surface capability facing the opposing lightning bolt which serves to symbolize the U.S. Navy's willingness to face great adversity.The cross anchor and rifle represents the Navy-Marine Corps Team of which OGDEN is proud to be a member.
The Ogden settlers then were forced to leave their scattered farm houses to gather together and build walls of earth, stone, and timber for protection.

USS OGDEN is one of the mainstays of the Amphibious Force of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Named for the city of Ogden, Utah, USS OGDEN has the ability to project the power of more than 900 troops, along with their equipment and air support, ashore.

The USS Peterson's keel was laid on April 29, 1974.
In 1986, Peterson deployed to the Mediterranean with the USS America (CV 66) Battle Group, and performed Search and Rescue duties during combat operations in the vicinity of Libya, and was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for her efforts.

 USS Peleliu - LHA 5 history
Peleliu deployed with USS Comstock (LSD 45), USS Juneau (LPD 10) and Marines of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) to the Persian Gulf in August 28, 1997 (actually being present in the Gulf in November) and participated in Exercise Eager Mace 98.
April 2004, LHA 5 is in Atlantic Ocean conducting a series of testing to prepare for an upcoming Inspection Survey (INSURV).
September 7, LHA 5 is currently underway in the Pacific Ocean conducting flight qualifications.

The Amphibious Transport Dock or LPD is used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked landing craft or amphibious vehicles augmented by helicopters in amphibious assault.
Although their capabilities are less than those of the new LSD-41 class, the ships of the Austin class, built between 1965-1971, were considered sufficiently modern to have their service lives extended, and the Navy had planned to inaugurate an overhaul program for all 11 of them commencing in early 1988.
The LPD has a helicopter platform built over a well deck in the rear of the vessel and this large flight deck for helicopter operations can accomodate six CH-46 amphibious transport helicopters, or three CH-53 helicopters for transport.

In late 1996 the USS Kitty Hawk Battle Group and the USS Essex ARG were forward deployed to a variety of regions for six months, including the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Gulf.
The USS Essex ARG spent several months operating and training in the Arabian Gulf and conducting port visits in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia.

 USS BOXER HISTORY
USS Boxer, a 27,100-ton Essex class aircraft carrier, was built at Newport News, Virginia.
On 5 August 1952, while engaged in combat operations, she suffered damage and casualties when a fire broke out in her hangar deck, but was able to return to duty off Korea after two weeks of repairs.
On February 11, 1995, the USS Boxer (LHD-4) was officially commissioned into the United States Navy as its fourth Multipurpose Amphibious Assault Ship, almost four years after construction on her began.

USS Boxer was built using more than 21,000 tons of steel, 400 tons of aluminum, 400 miles of electrical/electronic cables, 80 miles of piping and tubing of various types and sizes, and 10 miles of ventilation ducting.
USS Boxer arrived at Goa, India March 9, 2004 for its first port visit after participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Arabian Gulf.
June 1, USS Boxer, commanded by Capt. Thomas J. Culora, and USS John Paul Jones, commanded by Cmdr. Andrew F. Cully, arrived in Darwin May 30 to prepare for their upcoming biennial exercise, Talisman Saber 2005, a joint exercise between U.S. and Australian forces.

The group consists of Peleliu, Germantown, Ogden, guided-missile cruiser Port Royal, guided-missile destroyer Decatur, guided-missile frigate Jarret, and fast-attack submarine USS Greenville (SSN 772).

Volunteering their free time, Sailors and Marines undertook a major project of painting the interior and exterior surfaces, as well as the cement fence, at the Baan Kalim Primary School.
Approximately 55 Sailors and Marines from Peleliu and Ogden volunteered for the event, which started early in the morning and lasted until late in the afternoon.
