The cruise was interrupted with the outbreak of civil war in Spain, as Oklahoma sped to Bilbao, arriving 24 July 1936 to rescue American citizens and other refugees whom she carried to Gibraltar and French ports.
Decommissioning 1 September 1944, Oklahoma was stripped of guns and superstructure, and sold 5 December 1946 to Moore Drydock Co., Oakland, Calif. Ok lahoma parted her tow line and sank 17 May 1947 540 miles out, bound from Pearl Harbor to San Francisco.

The USS Arizona is the final resting place for many of the ship's 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives on December 7, 1941.
The USS Oklahoma was launched on March 23, 1914 and was 583 feet long, with a beam (width) of 95 feet wide and a standard displacement of 27,500 tons.

I sent the story to the USS Oklahoma Survivors association and was invited to their 2005 reunion and was the principal speaker at the opening of the new Oklahoma Historical Society Museum.
I was made an Honorary member of the USS Oklahoma family, and spent a wonderful weekend with those heroes who survived the loss of their ship at Pearl Harbor then and went on to win the war in the Pacific.
USS Oklahoma was known as the “Battleship that never fired a shot in anger,” but it was a ship that saved lives, including mine, by merely showing the flag of the United States.

Oklahoma was the largest of the Pearl Harbor salvage jobs, and the most difficult.
Oklahoma's port side had been largely torn open by Japanese torpedos, and a series of patches had to be installed.

USS Higbee DD 806 became the first U.S. naval vessel attacked by enemy MiG-17s, one of which dropped a bomb on the destroyer's stern, wounding four sailors.
USS Sterett stood by, as Higbee fought her fires, completed her turn and proceeded out of the area, still with her rudder inoperative.
The USS Higbee (DD-806) was back in Tonkin action minus her aft gunmount, but with her structural damages repaired, thanks to fast work by the Ship Repair Facility at Subic Bay, Philippines.

I stood on the pier, Naval Base Yokosuka, in June of 1970 watching the USS Oklahoma City (CLG-5) pull into port.
There were signs on the pier saying "Welcome Home Shellbacks." I shouldn't have, but I had to ask "What's a Shellback?" I learned a lot the three and a half years I spent on her, and yes, I did find out what a shellback was.
I hope to see some of you at a future USS Oklahoma City reunion.
