Ordered from Bath Iron Works on 30 October 1973 as part of the FY73 program, Oliver Hazard Perry was laid down on 12 June 1975, launched on 25 September 1976, and commissioned on 17 December 1977.

FFG 8, 29, 32, and 33 were built as short-hull ships but later modified into long-hull ships.
The Persian Gulf was a dangerous place to be during the Iran-Iraq War, and on 17 May 1987, USS Stark (FFG-31) was attacked, apparently accidentally, by an Iraqi warplane.
