The first Onondaga was a monitor in use during the Civil War and later sold to the French Navy.
The second Onondaga was a Coast Guard cutter taken into Navy service in 1917 and 1918.
The third Onondaga was also a cutter, which was in commission in the Coast Guard from 1934 to 1947, and operated as part of the Navy from 1941 to 1945.

On 24 November with Mahopac she engaged Southern batteries on the James at Howlett's, Va., and resumed the attack 5 and 6 December.
Onondaga was the only monitor left to guard Union forces on and along the James against Flag Officer John K. Mitchell's Confederate James River Squadron.
After attacks by Northern shore batteries and Onondaga, Dreu!ry exploded, Scorpion was abandoned, and the two Southern ironelads withdrew upriver when they were refloated the next day.

So much was thought of her abilities that in January 1865, Onondaga was the sole monitor on duty in the James River when the Confederate James River squadron, consisting of three ironclads, descended the river from Richmond.
Originally USS Roanoke was a square-rigged frigate of the old steam navy and sister to the USS Merrimac (later the CSS Virginia).

The USS Conestoga ran too far ahead of the rest of the Union force and was rammed and shot to pieces by the Confederates.
The USS Queen City and USS Tyler made a bold attelpt to intercept the CSS Eastport, but couldn't penetrate its armour.
The Union lost the USS Conestoga, and the USS Tyler and Queen City were both badly damaged.

On the afternoon of Friday, April 15, 1864, the side-wheeled steamer, USS Chenango, leaving the Navy Yard at New York, had steamed out into the harbor, on her way to Hampton Roads, Virginia.
She was to have anchored at the buoy at Sandy Hook, until the next morning, Saturday, April 16, to await the double turreted monitor, USS Onondaga, which was to accompany her south to her destination.
