USS North Dakota (BB-29), a Delaware-class battleship, was the first ship of the United States Navy named in honor of the U.S. state of North Dakota.
In the summer of 1921, she took part in the Army-Navy bombing tests off the Virginia Capes in which the German warships Frankfurt and Ostfriesland were sunk to demonstrate the potentialities of airpower.
She interrupted fleet operations during the next two summers to again cruise with midshipmen, contributing to the future strength of the Navy by educating its officers-to-be.

The USS Texas, constructed in 1892 with hull designation AC1, was a 301' long armored cruiser boasting two single 12" guns, six 6" guns, twelve 6 pounders, ten 1 pounders, Gatling guns, and torpedoes; a dreadnought to be reckoned with in her day.
Similar to the more famous USS Maine, hull designation AC2, the main difference being the main guns: while the Texas possessed single 12" guns along the centerline, in offset fore and aft turrets, the Maine had two guns per turret, increasing her displacement and overall dimensions.
In February, 1911, her name was officially changed to San Marcos, with the designation of USS Texas soon to be passed on to her successor.

When War was declared on April 25, 1898, the USS OLYMPIA and the rest of the Asiatic Squadron sailed out of Hong Kong harbor, as required by neutrality laws, and sailed about twenty-six miles to Mirs Bay.
The USS OLYMPIA took part in the experiments which proved the value of airpower, a factor that would have such a strong influence on the future of naval and land warfare.
Rapidly, the USS OLYMPIA, not a large vessel initially, was outsized and outgunned by the newer vessel shortly plying the oceans, including the US's own USS MAINE, USS TEXAS, USS OREGON, USS INDIANA and USS MASSACHUSETTS.
