  Perch
On 19 January 1948 Perch was redesignated as a submarine transport (SSP–313), and was placed in an active status, attached to the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
In September 1950 Perch transported a force of British Commandos in a raid on the northeast coast of Korea west of Tanchon.
Perch, reclassified as an APSS on 24 October 1956, departed San Diego 5 November for a reconnaissance exercise in the Panama Canal Area, returning to San Diego 11 December.

USS Perch (SS/SSP/ASSP/APSS/LPSS/IX-313), a Balao-class submarine, was the second submarine of the United States Navy to be named for the perch, a rather small European fresh-water spiny-finned fish.
Perch, again classified as a Submarine Transport, APSS-313, on 24 October 1956, departed San Diego 5 November for a reconnaissance exercise in the Panama Canal Area, returning to San Diego 11 December.
Perch was designated an Unclassified Miscellaneous Submarine IXSS-313' 30 June 1971 She was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register, 1 December 1971, and Disposition, sold for scrapping, 15 January 1973.

Smith (DM-23) and high-speed transport USS Gilmer (APD-11) are damaged by suicide plane; the destroyer escort USS Sederstrom (DE-31) by collision; and the high-speed transport USS Knudsen (APD-11) by horizontal bomber, all in the Okinawa area.
The battleship USS Colorado (BB-45) is damaged by an explosion, the destroyer USS Ammen (DD-527) by a horizontal bomber and the submarine chaser SC-737 by grounding, all in the Okinawa area.

USS PERCH (SS-313) is just one example of fleet subs built late in WWII that continued their active service well into the era of the nuclear powered submarine.
The "313-boat" was named after the first USS PERCH (SS-176), which was lost on 3 March 1942 north of Surabaya during the Navy's futile attempt to slow Japanese expansion at the beginning of the war.
PERCH was stripped of all her torpedo tubes and main engines one and two were removed.

USS ESCOLAR (SS-294) had her final training for combat at Pearl Harbor, from which she put out for her first war patrol 18 September and proceeded to Midway to top off with fuel.
There she joined USS CROAKER (SS-246) and USS PERCH (SS-313) and left on 23 September to conduct a coordinated patrol in the Yellow Sea north of 30!N. Cdr Millican was in command of this coordinated attack group, which was designated "Millican's Marauders."
PERCH reported that on 17 October she had received a message from ESCOLAR stating that she was in position 33!-44'N;127!-33'E, and was heading for 33!-44'N;129!-06'E. Neither PERCH nor CROAKER could raise ESCOLAR by radio after this transmission was received.

We went aboard the remains of the USS Darter, SS-227.
In tribute, I left a Perch plaque attached to the remains of the main induction valve prior to leaving the site.

 Bemjamin W. Bonk
Benjamin Bonk was was killed while serving aboard the submarine USS Escolar, along with Radioman First Class Kenneth S. Campbell of Westmont NJ.
He was survived by his parents, Stanley Bonk and Stella Bonk, of 5059 Russell Avenue, Pennsauken NJ, two brothers, Alexander and Stephen, and three sisters, Josephine, Eleanor, and Sophie.
Built by the by Cramp Shipbuilding Company of Philadelphia, PA and commissioned: 2 June 1944 with Commander William J. Millican in command, the USS ESCOLAR was a BALAO class submarine carrying a crew of 6 officers and 60 enlisted men.

Master Chief Kikis volunteered for submarine duty and was sent to USS PERCH (APSS-313) home ported in Subic Bay.
After volunteering for new construction, he was assigned to the USS WILLIAM H. BATES (SSN-680) in Pascagoula, MS.
Master Chief Kikis was transferred to the USS QUEENFISH (SSN-651), then onto USS PUFFER (SSN-652) both home ported in Pearl Harbor, HI where he was leading Torpedoman and First Lieutenant.

1924 - USS R-5 (SS-82) collided with USS S-16 (SS-121) in Asiatic waters.
2004 - the Ohio-class submarine USS GEORGIA (SSBN-729) was towed past the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD-5) as she entered Naval Station Norfolk, VA. GEORGIA is the fourth Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine to undergo conversion to a guided missile submarine.
Among those remembered were the 86 men lost in 1945 aboard USS LAGARTO (SS-371), whose wreckage was discovered by divers in the Gulf of Thailand earlier this year.
