The fifth USS Philadelphia (CL-41), a light cruiser, was laid down 28 May 1935 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard; launched 17 November 1936; sponsored by Mrs.
Philadelphia narrowly evaded a glide bomb 11 September, although several of her crew were injured when the bomb exploded.
Philadelphia underwent overhaul at New York and then engaged in refresher training in Chesapeake waters until 19 January 1944, when she steamed from Norfolk as an escorting unit for a convoy arriving Oran, Algeria 30 January.

USS Kearsarge (BB-5), the lead ship of her class of battleships, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named, by act of Congress, in honor of the famous American Civil War sloop-of-war Kearsarge">Kearsarge.
Kearsarge was decommissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 4 September 1909 for modernization.
The midshipmen were debarked at Annapolis, Maryland, on 29 August and Kearsarge proceeded to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where she decommissioned on 10 May 1920 for conversion to a crane ship and a new career.

 USS Augusta (CA-31) Information
USS Augusta (CA-31) (originally CL-31) was a Northampton-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, notable for service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II, and for her occasional use as a presidential flagship carrying both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman under wartime conditions.
Oiler USS Merrimack (AO-37) joined the task force on 28 April and fueled almost all of the ships, with Augusta's scout planes maintaining an air patrol during the dangerous fueling evolution.
Ultimately placed out of commission, in reserve, in a deferred disposal status at Philadelphia, on 16 July 1946, Augusta remained in the Philadelphia group of the Reserve Fleet until she was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 March 1959.

USS Philadelphia, a 9700-ton Brooklyn class light cruiser built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard was commissioned in September 1937.
Philadelphia continued her patrol and escort activities after the United States entered World War II in December 1941.
In 1944, Philadelphia took part in the Anzio operation between February and May, and the invasion of Southern France in August, frequently using her guns against enemy targets.

USS Anderson (DD-411) was a Sims-class destroyer in the United States Navy.
After operating briefly in San Francisco Bay, Anderson shifted to Long Beach on the 21st, and eight days later, took departure, ostensibly, for the Hawaiian Islands, in company with her division mates: Hammann, Mustin, and Rowan.
Interestingly, the ships soon received a change of orders; they rendezvoused with Philadelphia (CL-41) on the afternoon of 30 May, and soon proceeded down the coast, bound for Panama, as another increment of the Pacific Fleet was withdrawn to augment the Atlantic Fleet in its undeclared war with the German Navy in the Atlantic.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration launched the spacecraft from Cape Kennedy, Jan. 19, 1965 at 9:03 and it was recovered by the recovery forces aboard the U.S.S. Lake Champlain some 2100 miles downrange at 10:45 a.m.

 VADM Allan R. McCann, USN (Ret): biography
He transferred to USS R-2l (SS-98) at Coco Solo, Canal Zone, serving in command of that submarine until she was decommissioned in June 1924.
He was given command of the battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) and from 16 August to 28 November 1944 was in the Western Pacific.
The Tenth Fleet was dissolved in June 1945, and Rear Admiral McCann was transferred to duty on the staff of the Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet, and was subsequently designated Commander, Task Force 68, in the light cruiser USS Philadelphia (CL-41) during the Presidential trip to Berlin, 4 July to 8 August 1945.

 Course to Midway - USS Fanning DD-385
The USS Fanning (DD-385) was launched 18 September 1936 by United Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Corp., New York, N.Y.; sponsored by Miss Cora A. Marsh, great-great granddaughter of Lieutenant Fanning; and commissioned 8 October 1937, Lieutenant Commander E. Geiselman, in command.
Trials, fitting out, shakedown, and minor repairs occupied Fanning until 22 April 1938 when she joined Philadelphia (CL—41) at Annapolis, to escort the cruiser as she carried Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States on a Caribbean cruise.
After returning to New York on 11 May, she underwent overhaul, escorted MS Kungsholm with the Crown Prince of Sweden embarked, then sailed for the west coast to join the Battle Force in September.
