The USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG 58) was commissioned in March 1989 and is homeported in Mayport, Florida.

From March 9-11, 2001, the cruiser Philippine Sea was on alert as part of Unified Warrior, a complex series of missile firing exercises off the coast of Puerto Rico.
Philippine Sea was acting as air defense commander for the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Battle Group.
Philippine Sea coordinated precision maneuvers during the exercise to ensure each firing ship was positioned for their missile events, while stationing other ships nearby to gather data that was to be used to analyze and improve NATO and U.S. missile systems and tactics.

While the dhows were being tracked from the air, the Aegis guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) was directed by Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command to intercept the dhows.
With a British Royal Air Force Nimrod patrolling overhead, Philippine Sea intercepted the two dhows believed to be operating together in the North Arabian Sea at dawn on Dec. 20.
USS Philippine Sea is assigned to the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group and is home-ported at Naval Station Mayport, Fla. The Golden Swordsmen of VP-47 are on a regularly scheduled deployment to the CENTCOM area of responsibility and are stationed at Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Most covers posted from the USS PHILIPPINE SEA bear the standard 4-bar postmark (figure 1) although the ship's circular cachet was occasionally used to cancel covers (figure 2) where a specific date has been added to the basic design.
Figure 4 places the ship at 177°W, 68°S while figure 5 shows her to be at 175°W, 69°S. printed cachet (found on two sizes of covers, regular and business) noting USS PHILIPPINE SEA'S participation was prepared and apparently made available to the ship's crew.
Philippine Sea is one of two ships serving during OPERATION HIGHJUMP that Crosby managed to place covers aboard before the ships departed the United States.

USS Decatur, a part of Expeditionary Strike Group One, is home ported in San Diego.

On February 2, 1952 radar operator aboard the aircraft carrier Philippine Sea picked up an unidentified high-speed UFO off the east coast of Korea.
The object was first detected at a distance of twenty-five miles and when it closed to twenty miles it made a wide turn to the east, opening to a course directly away from the carrier.
Three signal observers on the deck of the Philippine Sea also sighted the UFO visually and reported independently to the bridge that they could detect three exhaust flames.
