USS Piper (SS/AGSS-409), a Balao-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the piper, a fish of the halfbeak family found in warm seas mostly along the shore.
Piper arrived at Midway 30 March 1945 for refit and training, and departed 26 April for her second war patrol in another wolf pack.
Piper arrived 15 October 1945 at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, Conn. During the next five years, Piper remained in the New London area with the exception of cruises to Nassau, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and overhauls in Portsmouth and Philadelphia Naval Shipyards.

 USS Piper
Piper spent the period from 15 February to 24 March off the south and southeast coasts of Honshu serving alternately on independent patrol and lifeguard duty for the then intensive B-29 and carrier strikes against Japan.
Piper arrived 15 October 1945 at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base New London, Conn. During the next five years, Piper remained in the New London area with the exception of cruises to Nassau, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and overhauls in Portsmouth and Philadelphia.
On 15 June Piper was reclassified to AGSS 409 and the next day she was placed "out of commission, special," and replaced Cero as the Detroit, Mich., Naval Reserve Training submarine.

On 30 January 1945, USS Threadfin sighted a large enemy patrol craft, but prudently allowed her to pass, unmolested, in the hope of drawing a bead on any merchant vessels for which she might be running interference.

While transiting to the Panama Canal, the formal surrender by the Empire of Japan to the Allies took place on the deck of battleship USS Missouri...which was anchored in Tokyo Bay...on 2 September 1945...thus ending the Second World War.
This device was capable of lighting up the banks on both sides of the canal at night...thereby enhancing the ability of the pilot to conn the vessel down the center of the canal during periods of darkness.
USS Threadfin was the lead ship in a Sixth Fleet Naval Review to honor the visit and inspection of the naval units by the President of the United States...Richard Nixon...who watched the demonstrations from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

USS Grampus (SS-207) was lost on 5 March 1943 with the loss of 72 officers and men when it was sunk in the Blackett Strait; Possibly in Vella Gulf, last contacts at 4 55S 152 30E.
USS Kete (SS-369) was lost on 20 March 1945 with the loss of 87 officers and men when it was sunk somewhere between 29 38N 130 02E and Midway.

According to Piper crewmembers, the highest number of dives recorded in the Submarine Library of the U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, is 13,851.
Home after a seven-month, around-the-world cruise are Destroyer Divisions 121 and 122, homeported in Newport, R. On the last leg of their journey from the Western Pacific, the eight ships transited the Suez Canel and made a midsummer visit to Athens, Greece.

The tolling of the boats ceremony was held at Seawolf park, alongside the USS Cavalla and USS Stewart.
The national anthem was performed by the Rumble Seat Four barbershop quartet; the tenor, John Harlan, is a submarine veteran who served on the USS PIPER, SS-409.

Beach received the Navy Cross, the second-highest decoration a Sailor can be awarded next to the Medal of Honor, for his role on Tirante in destroying Japanese ships in shallow waters just miles from the enemy coast.
Later in his career, Beach commanded USS Triton (SSRN 586) during its record-setting 84 day, 41,500 mile submerged circumnavigation of the globe — a record that still stands today.
In addition to his superb naval career, he was an accomplished author and wrote extensively about the submarine force and the Navy he loved.

I qualified aboard USS Balao, AGSS-285, in 1962, sailed aboard USS Tirante, SS-420, from 1963 to 1966, then 'swapped' to the USS Ronquil,SS-396, made a WestPac patrol and got out in Oct 1967 as an EM2(SS).
I SERVED ON THE USS HALFBEAK (SS-352) FROM 66-69 AND ON THE USS BLENNY (SS-324) FROM EARLY 69 UNTIL SHE WAS DECOMMISSIONED.
