USS Thresher (SS-200), a Tambor-class submarine[?], was the first United States Navy submarine to be named for a type of shark that is harmless to man and easily recognizable because its tail is longer than the combined length of body and head.
Thresher and sister-ship USS Tautog (SS-198)[?] departed the submarine base at Pearl on 31 October bound for a simulated war patrol north of Midway atoll.
Escorted by USS Litchfield (DD-336)[?] through Hawaiian waters lest she be mistaken for a Japanese submarine, Thresher received word at 0810 that Pearl Harbor was under attack by Japanese aircraft.

USS Apogon inflicted damage upon numerous other ships along the way but only had one more sinking to add to her name – that of the 2614-ton transport ship Hakuai Maru which she successfully hit during her seventh patrol.
USS Apogon arrived back home in America at the beginning of September 1945 – unlike so many, she had survived the Second World War.
USS Apogon was sunk during atomic bomb test “Baker” on 25 July 1946.

On the night of March 23, the wolf-pack was joined by a fourth member, USS Caiman (SS-323).
Pampanito rendezvoused with the new member of the pack a few miles east of the small island of Pulau Redang, and Lt. Commander William Bush, Perspective Commanding Officer (PCO) aboard Pampanito, was transferred to her.
On March 31, she exchanged recognition signals with USS Snook (SS-279), which was lost with all hands a few days later.
