The third USS Pittsburgh (CA–72) originally named Albany was laid down 3 February 1943 by Bethlehem Steel Co., Quincy, Mass.; launched 22 February 1944; sponsored by Mrs.
Pittsburgh trained along the east coast and in the Caribbean until departing Boston 13 January 1945 for duty in the Pacific.
Pittsburgh dashed to the rescue at 30 knots.

USS Pittsburgh, a 13,600 ton Baltimore class heavy cruiser built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned in October 1944.
Pittsburgh recommissioned in September 1951 and was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet.
USS Pittsburgh remained in the Pacific Reserve Fleet until stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in July 1973.

 USS Franklin (CV-13) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fifth USS Franklin (CV-13) (also CVA-13, CVS-13, and AVT-8), nicknamed "Big Ben", was an Essex-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, notable as the hardest-hit carrier to survive World War II.
Franklin was taken in tow by Pittsburgh (CA-72) until she managed to churn up speed to 14 knots (26 km/h) and proceed to Ulithi and then to Pearl Harbor where a cleanup job permitted her to sail under her own power to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, arriving on 28 April.
Following the end of the war, Franklin was opened to the public for Navy Day celebrations and on 17 February 1947 was placed out of commission at Bayonne, New Jersey.

The USS Pittsburgh CA-72, was laid down in Feb.1943 and commissioned 20 months later in Oct. 1944 at Bethlehem Steel Co. in Quincy Mass.
Eventually Pittsburgh made her way to Guam for temporary repairs, then on to Puget Sound for complete repair, where she remained until the end of the war.
Pittsburgh was decommissioned in 1947 only to be recommissioned in 1951 for service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, then in the Far East covering the Natl.

USS Toledo (CA-133) was a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy active during the Korean War.
Toledo was laid down on 13 September 1943 at Camden, New Jersey, by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, launched on 6 May 1945, sponsored by Mrs Edward J. Moan, and commissioned at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on 27 October 1946, Captain August J. Detzer, Jr.
On 5 March 1955, she departed Japan in company with Pittsburgh (CA-72) to return to the United States and arived in Long Beach 17 days later.

Pittsburgh was then able to steam safely across the Pacific to the West Coast, where a new bow was made and attached.
The loss of Pittsburgh's bow, as well as less severe structural damage suffered by the heavy cruiser Baltimore and the light cruiser Duluth, dramatically demonstrated both the power of nature and the sometimes unreliable strength of contemporary welding.

On 22 September, during a Dawn Alert, the Thorn was struck by a stray 40 mm projectile, courtesy of the USS Savo Island (CVE-77).
During the 130 knot winds, and heavy seas, the USS Pittsburgh (CA-72) lost her bow.
She was ultimately sunk by aircraft from the USS Saratoga (CV-60) on 22 August 1974, in the Atlantic, approximately 75 east of Jacksonville, FL.
