USS PONCE is the 12th and last ship in the AUSTIN - class of Amphibious Transport Docks.
The contract to build the Ponce was awarded on May 17, 1965, the keel was laid on October 31, 1966 and she was launched on May 20, 1970.
USS Ponce (LPD 15) returned to Norfolk August 24, 1996 after a two-and-a-half month mission of providing security and other assistance to the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia.

USS Ponce (LPD-15), a Trenton-class amphibious transport dock, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the city in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, which in turn was named after the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, the discoverer of Florida and first governor of Puerto Rico.
On 2 February 1982 during a towing exercise while en route to Portsmouth, England, Ponce collided with USS Fort Snelling (LSD-30)[?], causing minor damage to Ponce's port side, mainly to the accommodation ladder and flight deck catwalk.
Humanitarian aid to the recently-liberated Iraqis was being blocked by naval mines in the Khawar Abd Allah[?] river and the port of Umm Qasr.

Ponce and HM-14 are using two different devices to search for and destroy underwater mines in the region; the MK-105 sled (magnetic device) with the MK-104 acoustic device, and the AQS-14 sonar.
