Portland served in Rear Admiral T. Kinkaid's Attsek Group 4-8 May when a Japanese invasion force was turned back from Port Moresby, New Guinea during the two-day battle of the Coral Sea.
During this action 13 November 1942, Portland took a torpedo hit at 0158 on the starboard quarter, which blew off both inboard propellers, jammed the rudder five degrees right, and jammed number three turret in train and elevation.
Following this series of operations Portland steamed for Mare Island for overhaul, completed in time for her return to the western Pacific for pre-landing bombardments of Peleliu 12-14 September.

USS CONOLLY was last homeported in Mayport, Fla., and is currently hold on donation at the Naval Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility at Philadelphia, Penn., for future use as a floating museum.
On April 11, USS CONOLLY was tasked with escorting the USS GUAM (LPH 9), USS TRENTON (LPD 14) and USS PORTLAND (LSD 37) to Liberia from the Adriatic Sea in support of JTF Assured Response.
USS GUAM, USS TRENTON (LPD 14), USS PORTLAND (LSD 37) and USS CONOLLY were conducting routine training when they were directed to the coastal waters of Liberia.

USS PORTLAND was the second ANCHORAGE - class Dock Landing Ship and the second ship in the Navy named after the seaport city in Cumberland County, southern Maine, and largest city in the state of Oregon.
During the inital approach, the PORTLAND mildly brushed against the SIRIUS causing minor damage to one of her British lifeboats.
PORTLAND deployed as a unit of Mediterranean Amphibious Ready Group 2-83 in May 1983 in support of the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force at Beirut, Lebanon.

 USN Ships--USS Portland (CA-336)
USS Portland, first of a class of two 9800-ton heavy cruisers, was built at Quincy, Massachusetts.
She was part of the USS Enterprise task force during the August invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons later in that month and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in the last part of October.
Portland was torpedoed in the stern in that action and had to be towed to Australia for temporary repairs.

The Portland had a length of 610 feet in length, 66 feet in maximum beam or width, and drew about 22 feet from the keel to the waterline in the forward part of the ship, `a little more aft’ as the author wrote.
As the author wrote, “this proved to be the salvation of the ship and crews as World War II demonstrated.” While the ship drew praise on her seamanship, it was in the fields of gunnery and damage control that “saved her on at least two occasions” in naval engagements against the Japanese.
The Portland, in fact, went on to participate in the campaigns in the landings on Tarawa (Betio) in November 1943, the Marshall Islands (Eniwetok, Kwajalein, and Roi-Namur) in February-Marsh 1944 where the crews skillfully and effectively employed their 8-inch guns against Japanese defenses on these islands.

 Captain W.W. Bradley - The USS Bradley Namesake
Detached from the USS VIRGINIA in the fall of 1908, he served on board the USS CULGOA until October 1910, then reported to the Fore River Shipbuilding Company at Quincy, Massachusetts, to assist in fitting out the USS PERKINS.
In July 1924 he assumed command of the USS GOLDSTAR, station ship at Guam, Marinas Islands, and in November 1926 was detached for duty in the Naval Reserve Section of the Bureau of Navigation, Navy Department, Washington, D.C. In June 1929 he returned to Guam, having accepted an appointment as Naval Governor of that island.
From December of the year until June 1937 he had command of the USS PORTLAND, after which he was a student for a year at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.

Well, good news, the USS Salem is going to have it's Simi Annual work party May 16-27 and then we will have another work party for anyone who wants to join us in mid August.
There is a great sense of deja vu, walking into a plot or a console room, checking with the same guys that worked there in the 1950's, picking up your tools and opening up a computer or control panel to make it viewable for visitors, almost like getting ready for a material inspection.

Deployed as a member of the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force at Beirut Lebanon from May through December 1983, PORTLAND was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation and Navy Expeditionary Medal for actions during that deployment.
PORTLAND entered regular overhaul at Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Norfolk, Virginia on January 16, 1985 and completed overhaul two months early on July 19, 1985.
