Topic: USS Portsmouth SSN 707

  USS Portsmouth
On September 18, 1982, the USS Portsmouth was launched at the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Connecticut.
It was a war-vintage pile of junk that was nevertheless preferable to the noisy, grimy atmosphere that permeated the Portsmouth.
Technically Portsmouth, Virginia, was also a namesake city and the boat did pay a port-call there, but the southern namesake never displayed the same enthusiasm as the northern namesake did.

FastAttackSubmarines   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface shipping, the U.S. Navy's nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) are highly capable, multi-mission platforms.  These submarines remain the most effective anti-submarine warfare (ASW) platforms available to counter advanced diesel and nuclear-powered submarines operated by potential adversaries.
Typically two attack submarines are assigned to each carrier battle group to provide force protection.  They also carry about 20 percent of each battle group's Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles.  The attack submarine's stealth and unlimited endurance allows them to operate with near impunity in forward areas.
The SEAWOLF class was engineered for maximum design flexibility and is able to incorporate new technologies as they are developed.  They are designed to dominate the battle space across a broad spectrum of warfare missions in the littoral and open ocean areas.
