Until 1964, the PROTEUS was assigned to SUBRON 14 at Holy Loch, Scotland, and to SUBRON 16 at Rota, Spain.
From 1964 on, PROTEUS was assigned to SUBRON 15 at Apra Harbor, Guam.
Anyway, in 1994 the PROTEUS was re-instated as IX 518 serving as berthing ship for overhaul crews at Bremerton, Wash. This last assignment ended in 1999, when IX 518 was retired and stricken for the last time.

USS Proteus AS 19 in 1992 "wearing" WWII Camouflage during a two month deployment in Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea.
Proteus received her new orders and soon rendezvoused with units of the 3rd Fleet and together proceeded on to Sagami Bay in preparatory to entering Tokyo Bay for the final surrender.

In August 1903, USS Fortune made her way to the West Coast and arrived at Mare Island to serve as a tender for the submarines under construction by the Union Iron Works in San Francisco.

PROTEUS was commissioned in the New York Navy Yard on 15 March 1864, and sailed from New York on 11 April 1864 to join Admiral Theodorus Bailey's East Coast Blockading Squadron at Key West, Florida on the 22nd.
PROTEUS had an overall length of 529 feet; extreme beam 73 feet; standard displacement 9,250 tons; mean draft 24 feet; trial speed, 15.4 knots, and accommodations for 84 officers and 1,555 men.

The collier USS Proteus (AC-9) was laid down on October 31, 1911, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, and launched on September 14, 1912.
Proteus returned to Norfolk, 6 August 1919, and during the greater part of the next three years cruised from Norfolk to replenish the Fleet in the Caribbean.
Proteus spent the remainder of her career in operations between Norfolk and Melville, Rhode Island.

I remember that it was always said that a leak in a main steam line could cut a broomstick in half.
I never saw it happen with HP steam but I watched a high pressure air leak do it to a broom stick while I was on USS PROTEUS AS-19 and working on submarine high pressure air systems.
I never saw that happen, but I can tell you that we used to look for leaks with straw brooms, because it would cut the straw, and the heat from the steam would start to burn the broom.

This was the fourth overhaul of PROTEUS since she joined the FBM program on 8 July 1960.
