  USS Raritan (1843) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first USS Raritan was a frigate built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, laid down in 1820 but not launched until 13 June 1843, sponsored by Commodore Frederick Engle.
Active again in 1849, she served as flagship of the West Indies Squadron, then as flagship for the Home Squadron, and in 1850 was transferred to the Pacific to cruise between Panama and Cape Horn and as far west as the International Date Line.
Raritan remained there until she was destroyed, 20 April 1861, by Union forces as they evacuated the navy yard.

Raritan was laid down 10 May 1945 at Brown Shipbuilding Corporation, Houston, Texas, launched August 1945, commissioned as USS LSM-540 6 December 1945, LT. Roy T. Rector, USNR in command.
Recommissioned 4 November 1957, she was renamed USS Raritan (LSM-540) 14 October 1959, then decommissioned 1 December 1959 at Norfolk, Virginia and struck from the Naval Vessel Register 1 January 1960.

On 6th October 1980, USS Thomas A. Edison was esigned as SSN 610 to comply with the SALT I treaty and concrete blocks were placed in the missile tubes to disable the submarine's missile launch capability.

On 20 February 1844 the frigate, commanded by Capt. Francis H. Gregory[?], cleared New York Harbor and sailed for the South Atlantic where she served as Commodore Daniel Turner[?]'s flagship until she returned to the United States in November 1845.

Raritan, a harbor tug built for the Coast Guard by Defoe Boat Works, Bay City, Mieh., was launched 23 March 1939.
Executive Order 8929 of 1 November 1941 transferred the entire Coast Guard to the Navy~ Raritan continued duty in the Boston Harbor area through the end of the war.
She subsequently was transferred to Portsmouth, Va., and in 1962 she was assigned to the Great Lakes.

On 17 March 1898, the Holland, escorted by a tug, proceeded down the Raritan River for her initial submerged run in Raritan Bay.
While the trials were generally successful, recurrent problems with her steering control were noted by the Board, which recommended that the Navy not acquire the Holland VI until successful completion of still more trials.
With this task completed, much of the pressure on the Holland eased, for the six boats of this class were more than adequate to train their own replacement crew members as well as the crews of future new construction submarines.
