 USS Twiggs (DD-591) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Twiggs (DD-591), a Fletcher-class destroyer, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Marine Major Levi Twiggs (1793–1847).
Twiggs was laid down on 20 January 1943 at Charleston, S.C., by the Charleston Navy Yard; launched on 7 April 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
Following a shakedown cruise to Bermuda in December 1943, Twiggs operated out of Norfolk as a training ship until 12 May 1944, when she departed Hampton Roads in company with Franklin (CV-13), Gushing (DD-797), and Richard P. Leary (DD-664) and proceeded, via the Panama Canal and San Diego, to Hawaii.

The Japanese submarine RO-112 is sunk by the submarine USS Batfish (SS-310) in the Philippines.
The heavy cruiser USS San Fransisco (CA-38) and destroyers USS Colahan (DD-658) and USS Moale (DD-693) are damaged by a storm; the destroyers USS Heywood L. Edwards (DD-663) and USS Bryant (DD-665) and submarine chaser PC-578 are damaged by collision; and LST 792 is damaged by coastal defense guns, all in the Iwo Jima area.
The battleship USS Colorado (BB-45) is damaged by an explosion, the destroyer USS Ammen (DD-527) by a horizontal bomber and the submarine chaser SC-737 by grounding, all in the Okinawa area.

 USS Richard P. Leary (DD-664), Fletcher-class destroyer home page
Leary was named for Rear Admiral Richard Phillips Leary, whose US Navy career spanned the Civil and Spanish-American Wars.
On 10 December 1946, Leary decommissioned and was transferred to the Pacific Reserve Fleet.
Richard P. Leary earned six engagement stars on her Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon and two on her Philippine Liberation Ribbon for action in World War II.

While her boats assisted in the transfer of Army troops from the merchantman to Stratford (AP-41), Witter patrolled to seaward to protect against possible enemy submarine attack.
With the assistance of Morris (DD-417), Richard P. Leary (DD 664), Gregory (DD-802), and Arikara (ATF-98), the destroyer escort limped toward Kerama Retto.
Richard P. Leary then also dropped out of the group to assist Morris while Arikara and Gregor~v continued on with Witter.

We are seeking information on the USS Richard P. Leary and her crews.
My dad (USNR Lt. Eugene Francis Harrington) served in the Pacific on the Leary as one of its Gunnery Officers during WWII, from the shakedown cruise Spring 1944, thru action at Suriago Strait, Lingayen Gulf, Okinawa, Aleutians, back to Derstroyer Base San Diego for inactivation 1945.
Both served on the USS Richard P. Leary (DD 664) from 1943 to 1945.
