 USS BURRFISH (SS-312) (SSR-312) / HMCS GRILSE (SS-71) - SHIP'S HISTORY
On 2 November 1948, USS Burrfish (SS-312) was recommissioned and assigned to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at Kittery, Maine, for conversion to a radar picket submarine.
USS Burrfish was the submarine selected to become the first submarine of the new Canadian submarine branch in the Canadian Navy in forty years.
USS Burrfish was towed in late 1960 to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard to undergo conversion from a radar picket submarine to a vessel appropriate for service as a fleet-type submarine.

The men of the RONQUIL were anxiously awaiting liberty after they arrived so they could investigate what these beautiful islands had to offer a love-starved and thirsty submariner, ready to spend their extra submarine pay.
It turned out that the CO of the RONQUIL had called our Captain at his residence and told him that he was the CO of the Carbanero who was tied up behind his boat and that he called to tell him that his maneuvering room was flooding.
The "modified" Panther lying on a silk oriental pillow was presented to the CO of the RONQUIL.

Ronquil continued to close the range for 45 minutes, until we had closed to within 5,000 yds of the lead escort, one of 5 that we could estimate from the PPI.
I ordered Ronquil to 425 ft, but there was no thermal, and on the way down we were treated to two DC runs, close but fortunately causing no damage.
Ronquil continued on a northerly course toward our assigned OA, but it was becoming more and more likely that we wouldn’t be able to do much there.

BESUGO surrendered the tanker to RONQUIL and an attack was made on the port quarter escort with three torpedoes, and a 700-ton destroyer escort was sent to the bottom of the sea at 0400.
The gunfire continued and a half hour later a message was received by all Submarines in the area from the USS Salmon (SS 182) stating she was badly damaged and was fighting off two sub chasers and needed help.
The USS BLACKFIN (SS 322) relieved the COBIA, January 14, 1945 and the occasional sighting of the scouting plane brought no sightings and BLACKFIIN was detached from the group, January 17, 1945.

The keel of the USS Marlin (SST-2) was laid on May 1, 1952 at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation, Groton Conn. Marlin was launched on October 14, 1953 with Mrs.
USS Marlin and her sister ship USS Mackerel are the smallest operational submarines built for the U.S. Navy since 1911.
It is interesting to note that their general hull design is quite similar to that of USS Holland, the first submarine accepted by the U.S. Navy.

Ronquil was ordered down to 450 ft, in a vain hope that we could find a protecting thermal layer.
Ronquil reversed course to the east and cleared that section of the strait.

At the end of May I was re-assigned to Pearl Harbor and a new command, the USS Ronquil (SS-396).
As Ronquil headed north and out of the immediate area, the topic in the wardroom was not the two kills in the books, but the 4 for 10 shooting performance.
Ronquil was on her first patrol, and there were a few mechanical problems, most serious of which was constant short circuiting and loose connections on the Sonar gear.

I always thought that the boat(s) used were the Marlin or Mackerel - SS 204 and 205 which were apparently both assigned to the school at New London at the time the movie was made - probably 1942.
I was assigned temp duty to the ASR 9 - the USS Florikan.

 Harry F. Fischer Jr.
After graduating from the academy, he was assigned to USS San Francisco (CA-38) and was serving as signal officer on board that vessel at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked the fleet there on Dec. 7, 1941.
He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V for heroic service as assistant approach officer of USS Spikefish during the fourth war patrol of that vessel in the enemy Japanese-controlled waters of the Nanpo Shoto, Yellow Sea and East China Sea Areas from July 8 to August31, 1945.
In May, 1949, he became executive officer of USS Carp (SS-338) and in January, 1950, he was transferred to USS Ronquil (SS-396) as commanding officer.

With the introduction of nuclear power to the submarine force, Chief Pennington was one of the first to be selected to attend the various nuclear power schools, both military and civilian.
In June 1961, after completing nuclear power training, he was assigned as leading chief reactor technician in the U.S.S. Thresher (SSN 593), and in September of the same year he was sent to the David Taylor Model Basin in Washington, where he assisted in evaluating his ship's performance.
Because of his outstanding performance of duty as a submariner, and his knowledge of the submarine nuclear power program, Chief Pennington was selected to join a group to represent the submarine force in the form of a motivation team.

Bill rode the Ronquil SS396 thru her first 4 War Patrols and I read in Submarine Operations of WWII the Ronquil had shot herself in the stern so I asked him about it and got the following reply’s.
I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but I really appreciate it when these guys will take the time to fill me in on what really happened, I hope Bill will inspire some of the other WWII Vets.

I served as the MPA and QAO on the USS William H. Bates from 1993-1996.
I qualified aboard USS Balao, AGSS-285, in 1962, sailed aboard USS Tirante, SS-420, from 1963 to 1966, then 'swapped' to the USS Ronquil,SS-396, made a WestPac patrol and got out in Oct 1967 as an EM2(SS).
I SERVED ON THE USS HALFBEAK (SS-352) FROM 66-69 AND ON THE USS BLENNY (SS-324) FROM EARLY 69 UNTIL SHE WAS DECOMMISSIONED.

He was a WWII Navy veteran serving from 1940 to 1945 on the USS RANGER and the GEORGE ELLIOT Troop Carrier, in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters.

In March 1959 she returned to the North Pole and buried the ashes of famous arctic explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins.
Stryker was transferred to the commissioning crew of USS Scamp (SSN-588) in September 1959.
During this period he was advanced to EMC (Electricians Mate, Chief) and was commissioned as an Ensign, U.S. Navy in July 1961.
