  USS Runner (SS-476) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Runner (SS/AGSS-476), a Tench-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the runner, an amberfish inhabiting subtropical waters.
Runner deployed to the Mediterranean Sea with the Sixth Fleet from 8 July to 28 October 1966.
On 25 January 1969, Runner was decommissioned at the Boston Naval Shipyard, and towed to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, where she was redesignated AGSS-476 and served as a Naval Reserve Training vessel until stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 15 December 1971.

Runner deployed to the Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet from 8 July to 28 October 1966.

 History of the USS INTREPID CV-11
Having served aboard several aircraft carriers and a large seaplane tender, and as superintendent of aviation training at Pensacola, Captain Sprague (now rear admiral, chief of aviation training at Pensacola) was well qualified to con the newest, and one of the biggest, as she commenced wartime operations.
That night torpedo planes attacked the task force, one of them scoring on USS INTREPID; a "tin fish" exploded portside at the waterline, tearing a huge gash in her hull and killing five enlisted men (six others were missing).
USS INTREPID was underway for post repair trials on 11 February 1945.

Although a careful, lookout was maintained in the hope that RUNNER was safe but without transmission facilities, results were negative.
Thus her loss must be ascribed to an enemy minefield, of which there were at least four in the area to which she was assigned, to an operational casualty, or to an unreported enemy attack.
RUNNER patrolled the Palau area on her first war run in February 1943, and all of her sinkings were made here.

He had been the skipper of USS Trout (SS-202) on patrol off Midway Island on December 7, 1941 when he received a radio transmission reporting the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
On October 28, 1944, a wolfpack of four U.S. submarines left Pearl Harbor and sailed west to patrol the Japanese convoy routes from the southern coast of Hainan Island north to Hong Kong.
The group was joined by USS Archerfish (SS-311) for remainder of the trip to Saipan where they took on fuel and supplies and were rejoined with Pipefish.

 A Short History of the USS Growler
Built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine, Growler had a similar outward appearance to Grayback but was quite different in her internal layout; aft of the missile guidance center the layout was nearly identical to the smaller USS Darter (SS-576).
Since the BPQ-2 Trounce guidance equipment was not yet installed, USS Runner (SS 476), a Regulus guidance submarine, took control immediately after launch and guided the missile during the 30 minute flight.
One guidance submarine, USS Medregal (SS 480) and the other East Coast Regulus I launch boat, USS Barbero (SSG 317), were also moving to Pearl Harbor as all Regulus I operations were being consolidated in the Pacific.

They have a subvets chapter NOT named for Nathanael, (they are named for the USS Runner).
The Ozark-Runners decided to raise a memorial to submariners and more specifically (I think to have a place to put it) they decided on relating it to the USS Nathanael Greene and putting it in NG Park there in Springfield.
Initial contact has been made to all and we have 31 confirmed to attend, not the least of which is Cap'n Gentry.
