USS Unicorn (SS-436), a Tench-class submarine, was the second submarine of the United States Navy to be given that name for the narwhal, an Arctic marine cetacean with a single tusk suggesting the horn of a unicorn.
USS Comber (SS-527), a Tench-class submarine, was the second submarine of the United States Navy to be named for the comber, a fish found in the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the eastern Atlantic as far north as the British Isles.

For the next three years, Runner was based at (A republic on the Isthmus of Panama; achieved independence from Colombia in 1903) Panama and participated in annual fleet exercises in the (An arm of the Atlantic Ocean between North and South America; the origin of the Gulf stream) Caribbean Sea.
In the autumn of 1957, Runner participated in North Atlantic (An international organization created in 1949 by the North Atlantic Treaty for purposes of collective security) NATO exercises, visiting ports in (A republic in western Europe; the largest country wholly in Europe) France and (A division of the United Kingdom) England.
Runner deployed to the (The largest inland sea; between Europe and Africa and Asia) Mediterranean Sea with the Sixth Fleet from 8 July to 28 October 1966.

Runner, with ten other US submarines entered Tokyo Bay on 31 August and represented the US submarine service at the formal surrender ceremonies.
Runner and her sister submarines departed Japan on 3 September, arriving Pearl Harbor on 12 September.
On 25 January 1969, Runner was decommissioned at the Boston Naval Shipyard, and towed to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, where she was redesignated AGSS-476 and served as a Naval Reserve Training vessel until stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 15 December 1971.

Runner deployed to the Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet from 8 July to 28 October 1966.

My first submarine, and one of seven reasons I made the navy a career (all seven submarines), was USS Growler (SSG-577).  I went aboard her in Pearl Harbor on her arrival after commissioning.
On September 28, 1966 I received orders to the USS Trumpetfish SS-425 in Charleston, South Carolina, I reported to Sub Ron 4 on October 17, 1966 because the Trumpetfish was out at the time and was placed on the USS Pollack  SSN-603 TAD for a week until she came in.

 A Short History of the USS Growler
Built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine, Growler had a similar outward appearance to Grayback but was quite different in her internal layout; aft of the missile guidance center the layout was nearly identical to the smaller USS Darter (SS-576).
Since the BPQ-2 Trounce guidance equipment was not yet installed, USS Runner (SS 476), a Regulus guidance submarine, took control immediately after launch and guided the missile during the 30 minute flight.
One guidance submarine, USS Medregal (SS 480) and the other East Coast Regulus I launch boat, USS Barbero (SSG 317), were also moving to Pearl Harbor as all Regulus I operations were being consolidated in the Pacific.

In early '62 after Sub School, I was sent to the USS Carbonero (SS-337), in Pearl Harbor.
Did Yard period in Pearl and left the Carbonero in '65 for some TAD on the USS Sterlet (SS-392), before being discharged in June of '65, with a rating of ETR2(SS).
Went to FT A and C school at Bainbridge MD. Then went to Submarine school NLON CT. Went aboard the USS Conger SS 477 and served until about a year later when she went into the yard.

Japan formally surrendered aboard Missouri on Wednesday 2 September 1945, and after three years and nine months of Pacific naval warfare, Pearl Harbour was avenged.
A U.S. Army honor guard presents arms as representatives of the Allied Powers arrive at pierside to be taken to USS Missouri for the surrender ceremonies, 2 September 1945.
Uniform patches and unit flag indicate that the honor guard is from the 11th Airborne Division Reconnaissance Battalion.
