 USS S-21 - Gallant Lady of the Past
The keel of USS S-21 (SS-126) was laid down on 19 December 1918 by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation...a subcontractor of the Electric Boat Company of New York City, New York...at Quincy, Massachusetts.
Departing her Connecticut submarine base on 22 October of 1930, USS S-21 transited to the Territory of Hawaii...via the Panama Canal and California...and arrived at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1930.
USS S-21 served, again, in the Panama Canal Zone areas from March into April of 1929; and, from January through February of 1930.

She was manned with 14 officers and 126 enlisted men and was capable of transiting on the surface to its dive point at 21 knots and then at 16 knots to its patrol area.

Her keel was laid at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine on 21 May 1962 and she was launched two years later on 12 MAY 1964.

The gunboat USS Plymouth (PG-57) is sunk by a submarine torpedo.
The PT-boat tender USS Niagara (AGP-1) is sunk by a horizontal bomber in the Solomons.

 S-44
Arriving on the 16th, she departed Balboa on the 24th with USS S-21 (SS-126), USS S-26 (SS-131), and USS S-28 (SS-133) to conduct a security patrol in the western approaches to the canal.
USS S-44 (SS-155) operated off the New England coast into the summer of 1925.
With USS S-42 (SS-153) and USS S-46 (SS-157), S-44 proceeded to New London and thence, in November, to Philadelphia where the work was done.

S-26 was proceeding from Balboa, Canal Zone, to its patrol station in company with USS S-21 (SS-126), USS S-29 (SS-134) and USS S-44 (SS-155) and an escort vessel, USS PC-460, at the time of the disaster.
At 2210 the escort vessel sent a visual message to the submarines that she was leaving the formation and that they could proceed on the duty assigned.
Commissioned: 15OCT23 with Lt Edmund W. Burrough in command.
