 USS SAVANNAH (AS-8)
When commissioned, USS Savannah was 414 feet 6 inches in length overall, had an extreme beam of 46 feet 1 inch, and had a mean draft of 26 feet 5 inches at her normal displacement of 10,800 tons.
USS Savannah's last duty was carrying passengers from San Pedro to Bremerton...where she arrived on 15 October 1926.
USS Savannah (AS-8) was decommissioned on 16 December 1926...and was placed in reserve at the Puget Sound Navy Yard.

USS S-23 (SS-128) was a first-group (S-1 or "Holland") S-class submarine of the United States Navy.
By 22 December, she was off western Attu; and, on 23 December, she received orders to take up station off Paramushiro.
Her keel was laid down on 18 January 1919 by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in Quincy, Massachusetts.

USS Beaver, named for the amphibious fur-bearing rodent, was laid down as merchant ship SS Beaver at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company at Newport News, Virginia.
Following commissioning, USS Beaver (AS-5) operated along the west coast of the United States until June of 1919...and then convoyed a division of submarines to the newly established submarine base at Pearl Harbor in the Territory of Hawaii.

Using equipment and parts from S -23, S-25 was repaired at Dutch Harbor and at Kodiak; and, on 28 January, she departed her Unalaska base for another patrol in the Attu area.
But, On the 6th, S-23 made it into Dutch Harbor.
She spent 21 days on station, two of which, 6 and 7 February, were spent repairing the port main motor control panel.

 The Forgotten Theater U.S. Submarine Operations in the Aleutians in World War II
Shown at Pearl Harbor in 1927, only three years after she was commissioned, USS S-18 (SS-123) was one of the first two submarines sent to Dutch Harbor in January 1942.
This move precipitated the Battle of the Komandorski Islands on 26 March, in which an outnumbered force of U.S. cruisers and destroyers fought a retiring action in which the heavy cruiser USS Salt Lake City (CA-25) was heavily damaged and went dead-in-the water, yet survived to fight another day.
Nonetheless, Attu was fiercely contested by the Japanese, and it wasn’t until the end of the month, when over 2,300 of their number had been lost in several suicidal “banzai” attacks, that they yielded the island to the invaders.

Let's just say that going into Sunday confidence in the offensive abilities of the Mariners was running a bit low around the hallways of the mighty SS Mariner Corporate Park.
Saturday was no exception, as Pedro threw another stunner - three hits over seven innings, 7 K's, and just the one earned run in a 5-1 Boston win.
First Half Freddy only lasted 1 2/3 innings - a personal record, I think - in a 7-run outburst that led to a 12-1 White Sox win.
