The keel of USS S-37 (SS-142) was laid down on 12 December 1918 by the Union Iron Works Division of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation...a subcontractor of the Electric Boat Company of New York City, New York...at San Francisco, California.
USS S-37 (SS-142) earned five battle stars for her services during the Second World War.
USS S-37 went to 110 feet and ran silent on a northerly course as the submarine chaser dropped depth charges where the submarine had been.

Smith (DM-23) and high-speed transport USS Gilmer (APD-11) are damaged by suicide plane; the destroyer escort USS Sederstrom (DE-31) by collision; and the high-speed transport USS Knudsen (APD-11) by horizontal bomber, all in the Okinawa area.

Transiting to Pearl Harbor in the Territory of Hawaii, USS Canopus tended Submarine Division 17 of the Battle Force...with whom she sailed for permanent duty with the United States Asiatic Fleet in September of 1924.
On 10 April 1942, USS Canopus (AS-9) was proudly backed off into deep water under her own power, and the brave veteran whom the Japanese could not sink ended a lifetime of service to the United States Navy when she was laid to rest by her own men off Mariveles Bay, Bataan.
Arriving in the Philippine Islands on 4 November 1924, USS Canopus began her regular schedule of services in Manila Bay...and each summer based with the fleet at Tsingtao in China, with occasional training cruises to various Chinese and Japanese ports, and to the British and French colonies.

The "Polynesian" was built by R.Steele & Co, Greenock in 1872 for the Montreal Ocean SS Co. She was a 3,983 gross ton ship, length 400ft x beam 42.5ft, straight stem, one funnel, three masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 13 knots.
SS Patricia, built by A. Vulcan, of Stettin, for the Hamburg American Line, and launched on 20 February 1899.
The SS Polaris sailing out of Hanko, Finland, was the main routing for Finnish emigrants on their way to North America.

Of the aforementioned S-class submarines, the S-30 (SS-135) was awarded two battle stars for her World War II service; the S-32 (SS-136) earned five battle stars during World War II; the S-33 (SS-137) earned one battle star; S-37 (SS-142) earned five battle stars; and S-38 (SS-143) earned three battle stars during World War II.
While the number of Aviators rescued by each submarine varies from boat to boat, there were 31 Aviators whose luck boat was the USS TIGRONE (SS-419), another 22 Aviators were rescued by the USS TANG (SS-306), and for 21 Aviators it was the USS RAY (SS-271).
By the time the U.S. Navy entered World War II in December, 1941, with several older submarines now re-commissioned, we entered it with 111 submarines –Still these were mostly of the older "R" and "S" classes, short range vessels developed during and after World War I.
