  USS Saipan (LHA-2) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saipan’s operational career began in July of 1979 when she was diverted from Fleet Refresher Training to Special Contingency Operations for possible non-combatant evacuation of American personnel from Nicaragua during that country’s civil war.
In May of 1980, Saipan was underway to augment U.S. Coast Guard efforts to assist Cuban refugees crossing the Straits of Florida to the United States.
From March of 1990 through September of 1990, Saipan was deployed to the Mediterranean and conducted Non-combatant Evacuation Operations, evacuating 1,600 civilians from war-torn Liberia in support of Operation Sharp Edge.

The battle of Saipan was a battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought on the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands from 15 June 1944 to 9 July 1944.
After the battle, Saipan became an important base for further operations in the Marianas, and then for the invasion of the Philippines in October 1944.
However, the Saipan scenes were actually filmed in Hawaii and southern California.

The Saipan was accompanied by the USS Ponce and the Pensacola.
USS Ponce operated bilaterally with Greek units in exercise "Alexandros '93," with the Tunisians in "PHIBLEX '93" (Amphibious Landing Exercises), and conducted a training offload near the coast of Israel.
In August 2002 the Navy announced that the USS Saipan would be deploying at the head of an Expeditionary Strike Group that would be comprised of a Guided Missile Cruiser, a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine in addition to the normal LPD and LSD vessels.

USS Saipan, lead ship of a pair of 14,500-ton small aircraft carriers built at Camden, New Jersey, was commissioned in July 1946.
In October 1953, Saipan transited the Panama Canal and soon crossed the Pacific to begin a 7th Fleet deployment that included a mission delivering aircraft to French forces in Indo-China in April 1954.
Saipan was redesignated CC-3 in January 1964, but was again reclassified in September of that year, becoming a major communications relay ship with hull number AGMR-2.

Saipan is the lead ship in the Saipan Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG), which departed Norfolk, Va., Jan. 19 for a two-month deployment to the Caribbean.

The first Saipan (CVL-48) was laid down on 10 July 1944 by the New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; launched on 8 July 1945, sponsored by Mrs.
Commissioned eleven months after the close of World War II, Saipan trained student pilots out of Pensacola from September 1946 to April 1947 when, reassigned to Norfolk as homeport, she departed the Gulf of Mexico; participated in exercises in the Caribbean; then proceeded to Philadelphia for overhaul.
Saipan then returned to Norfolk, arrived on the 31st, and sailed again on 28 January 1949.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is considering sending three warships with about 2,000 U.S. Marines, headed by the helicopter carrier USS Saipan, to rebellion-torn Haiti as the Pentagon weighs options to address the crisis, defense officials said on Friday.
The Saipan is an amphibious assault ship that carries helicopters and AV-8B Harrier attack jets.
The other two ships are the dock-landing ship USS Oak Hill and the amphibious transport dock USS Trenton, the officials said.

Saipan, which deployed to the Arabian Gulf Jan. 10, is now scheduled to offload its Marines and equipment from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade in Morehead City, N.C., and return to its homeport of Norfolk, Va., in late June.

A gymnasium aboard USS Saipan (LHA 2), undergoing an availability at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va., was engulfed in flames, and the ship needed assistance.
While the fire was confined to the gymnasium, Saipan was running out of breathing apparatus.
