By April 1968, after a year on that schedule, she had admitted 5,354 patients and treated another 9,187 on an outpatient basis.
In commission in reserve, as of 31 August 1971, Sanctuary was decommissioned on 15 December.

She continued to operate off the I Corps Tactical area, the northern provinces of South Vietnam; and, for the most part, rotated between stations, such as Danang, Phu Bai, Chu Lai, and Dong Ha, every two to four days as needed by the marines fighting ashore.
The next 11 months were spent at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard where she was converted for use as a dependent's hospital and as a commissary/Navy exchange retail store.

 USS SANCTUARY(AH-17) Ship's History
Launched on 15 AUG 44 as USS SANCTUARY (AH-17) and delivered 30 SEP 44, she was subsequently converted to a hospital ship by Todd Shipbuilding at Hoboken, New Jersey, whose citizens matched the cost of conversion with war bonds.
The normal capacity of the SANCTUARY was 786, as this is the number of bunks she has in her air-conditioned wards, and all the wards were filled by 0300, on the 14th of September, 1945.
SANCTUARY began her extended overseas tour spending a minimum of 50 days operating on the line each quarter, followed by an availability and upkeep period at Subic Bay.

The Sanctuary is currently berthed in Baltimore, and is being converted into a community healthcare facility.

On the morning of 17 May, the task group rendezvoused with Regulus (AF-57) for replenishment and, during the early evening hours, began its approach to the demilitarized zone (DMZ).
Whitfield County returned to Vietnamese waters in the summer to resume her support operations for riverine activities in the Mekong Delta region, basing again at Vung Tau.
She departed Yokosuka on 28 July and reached her destination-via Hong Kong-on 17 August.

The USS Bountiful, USS Refuge and USS Samaritan were converted from transport ships into hospital ships during 1944 because of the increasing number of casualties on an emergency basis.
The USS Rescue was converted from a seaplane tender in 1945 because the need for treating casualties in the Pacific battles became much greater than the need to maintain seaplanes.
In 1944, some Navy Nurses who served abroad the USS Refuge in the Mediterranean area were invited to an audience with the Pope who was interested in their work and met him personally for an interview.

USS REPOSE was built for the United States Maritime Commission by the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company at Chester Pennsylvania.
On 14 February 1966 she arrived in Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam, and in April 1967 she was joined by her sister ship USS Sanctuary (AH-17).
After she returned from Vietnam Repose served as a dockside hospital annex for the Long Beach Naval Hospital, but soon this proved to be uneconomical and she was reduced to scrap.
