 USS Santee (1855) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first USS Santee of the United States Navy was one of its last sailing frigates in service.
Santee departed Portsmouth on 20 June 1861, stopped at Hampton Roads to load ammunition, and resumed her voyage to the Gulf of Mexico on 10 July.
After six months of effort, she was finally raised; and, on 8 May 1913, Santee departed the Severn under tow and proceeded to Boston where she was burned for the copper and brass in her hull.

 USS Santee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Santee, after the Santee River of South Carolina.
The first Santee was one of the last sailing frigates of the Navy, started in 1820 but not completed until 1855.
The second Santee (CVE-29) was acquired in 1940 as a fleet oiler, converted to an escort aircraft carrier in 1942, and in service until 1946.

The first Santee, a sailing frigate rated at 44 guns, was laid down in 1820 by the Portsmouth (N.H.) Navy Yard; but, due to a shortage of funds, she long remained uncompleted on the stocks.
The two ships were saved from distruction by Confederate gunboats by Santee outside the bar,Santee, under full sail and unencumbered by the confines of the river, came to the aid of the stranded warships and opened fire on the approaching gunboats.
For decade after decade, the frigate served the Naval Academy without interruption and was a strong and memorable agent in molding the nation's naval officers.

After conversion, nominally completed on 8 September, Santee reported to Task Force 22 (TF 22) and the first plane landed on her flight deck on the 24th.
From 12 May through 1 June, Santee traded in her own air arm for 66 F4U Corsairs and 15 F6F Hellcats and personnel of Marine Air Group 21 (MAG 21).
Santee departed Wakanoura Wan on 3 October, left her formation on the 6th to search for a missing PBM Mariner aircraft which had carried Rear Admiral William D. Sample, the ship's first commanding officer after her conversion to an escort carrier.

 The Ranger Air Group Over Casablanca - Air Group 4
Details of the USS Ranger's participation in the North African campaign called "OPERATION TORCH" are contained in the excellent history of the USS Ranger compiled by Robert J. Cressman for the Spring and Summer issues of The Hook: Journal of Carrier Aviation.
During OPERATION TORCH, the Ranger was joined with 4 escort carriers, the USS Santee, USS Suwanee, USS Sangamon and USS Chenango, for the North African engagement.
Capt Allcorn thus had the unique, and somewhat dubious, distinctions of flying the first Cub from an aircraft carrier, becoming the first Army aviator to be wounded in the campaign, and the first to be shot down in the campaign.

USS Lexington (CV 2) was at sea about 425 miles southeast of Midway toward which she was headed to deliver a Marine Scout Bombing Squadron.
USS Enterprise (CV 6) was also at sea, about 200 miles west of Pearl Harbor, returning from Wake Island where she had delivered a Marine Fighter Squadron.
In the ensuing battle, the four large Japanese carriers were sunk, carrying with them 258 planes along with a high percentage of Japan's most highly trained and battle-experienced carrier pilots, a blow to Japan from which she could not recover.

On 10 March, light cruiser Savannah">Savannah (CL-42) and Eberle were investigating a cargo liner which had been spotted by Santee's aircraft and which had been tentatively identified as the Karin, a Dutch merchantman.
The group was dissolved upon arrival at the Norfolk Navy Yard on 10 December, and Santee, minus her aircraft, stood out of Norfolk on 21 December, and headed for New York in company with battleship Texas">Texas (BB-35), and several destroyers.
She stood out of Norfolk on 13 February with destroyer escort Tatum">Tatum (DE-789), transited the Panama Canal on 18 and 19 February and moored at San Diego on the 28th.

On July 16,1862 he was commissioned a lieutenant and from September 1862 to January 1865 was executive officer of the steam gunboat USS CHIPPEWA, screw sloop USS PAWNEE, and the Monitor MONTAUK in succession, being actively involved in operations involved with the siege of Charleston.
He was given command of the steel cruiser USS ATLANTA in 1890, but was transferred to be the Inspector of the armored cruiser NEW YORK that was then building.

These four, USS Sangamon (CVE 26), USS Suwanee (CVE 27), USS Chenanago (CVE 28), and USS Santee (CVE 29), were so successful in anti-submarine work and in covering amphibious operations that, after participating in the landings in North Africa, they were deployed to the Pacific.
This operational phase was so successful that three Jeeps — USS Core (CVE 13), USS Card (CVE 11) and USS Bogue (CVE 9) [left] — and their escorting destroyers sank a total of 16 U-boats and 8 milch cows in a period of 98 days.
Hits were scored on Santee, Suwanee, USS Kitkun Bay (CVE 71) and USS St. Lo (CVE 63).

Despite his tendencies toward mischief, Eric was rapidly promoted through the ranks of the Operations departments he served in eventually reaching the rank of Commander.
He served as Chief of OPs on board the USS Venture and is credited with having performed admirably under pressure and having ‘shown a talent for command unmatched in his peers’.
There was a good chance that Eric would have been able to secure a command shipboard, however he preferred the more ‘settled’ life of a space station as it afforded him an opportunity to indulge his pension for collecting.

USS Tonawanda, a 3400-ton twin-turret monitor built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in October 1865.
The twin-turret monitor moored in the Severn River, at left, is USS Tonawanda (renamed Amphitrite in 1869).
Note the small tug on the beach at left, apparently under construction or undergoing a major overhaul, and the side-wheel steamer at the dock.

I served aboard USS Taluga from 29 July 66 until 29 September 67 when I was separated from the navy.

In December 2000, the USS Kennebec (AO-36) Association was founded via a chat room which was less than easy to use.
The first reunion was held in the Fall of 2001 and interest has been such they are now an annual event.

One escort carrier, CVE-60 USS Guadalcanal, is credited with the only combat capture of a German submarine by the U.S. Navy during WWII.
On 4 June 1944, USS Guadalcanal, with the assistance of destroyer escorts DE-149 USS Chatelain and DE-133 USS Pillsbury, captured the German submarine U-505 off the coast of Africa.
Three other escort carriers -- CVE-13 USS Core, CVE-11 USS Card and CVE-9 USS Bogue -- along with their destroyer escorts are credited with the sinking of 16 U-boats and 8 milch cows (supply and refuelling submarines) over a three-month period.
